Really entertaining.
Revisado: 01-03-22
I love the way thrillers pull you in and this was no exception. My favorite kind is when I figure out a twist JUST before the author reveals it and Fargo did that at least two or three times in this book. I loved the plot overall and the ways in which Fargo explored the complexities of women’s various relationships to other women within the strictures of patriarchal society. Great listen - the narrators leaned into their characters well.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Taylor Jenkins Reid knows how to write a character.
Revisado: 12-29-21
I love reading Reid’s work for the way the characters are built so richly and fully. These stories are incredibly believable and poignant - Reid also has a knack for putting feelings and experiences into just the right words you didn’t know you were looking for. Listening to this one is a must - the performance is phenomenal.

Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

This was a fantastic listen. The narrator is excellent and the story is deep but with a light touch. I was captivated by both the conceit of the plot and the characters and left wanting more.

As good as everyone said!
Revisado: 12-14-21
My friend said it best: Reid has a great ability to make the reader highly invested in characters they didn’t expect to be connected to. I had read this description a few times and thought it probably wasn’t for me. I was very wrong. Reid has a light hand on the plot and a deep understanding of character. What an enjoyable listen.

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Wasn’t in the right space
Revisado: 05-10-21
I think I needed to read this book, rather than listen to it, for it to have its full impact. I feel like I grasped lightly some of the difficult questions Ishiguro offers to his readers here, but I didn’t engage as deeply with them as I could have if I were reading the book. I want to try again in the future. I also appreciated the narrator’s ability to perform the book in the voice of an AI, but it made it hard for me to focus my attention for long intervals.

Historia
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they learn that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you'll ever see; Benji, the crazed lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker.

Another stellar listen
Revisado: 05-10-21
I just love the heart in these books. Backman writes simply and allows his readers to think deeply from his suppositions - the structure of the story, the constant unknowns and red herrings, push the reader to think about what each possible outcome might mean for the humanity of a community. It was heart wrenching and lovely. Ireland is a very talented narrator and made this a true pleasure to listen to.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

A hard but good listen
Revisado: 05-03-21
This book is incredible. An author who can not only write about such a fraught issue as sports-rape-culture but do it with subtlety, nuance, and empathy is so rare. One that can do it AND have that work be translated so that it comes across well in different languages (also thanks to whoever was the genius who translated it!)?! Backman is a brilliant, evocative author who writes simply, trusting that his words with elicit complex reactions within the reader instead. I can’t wait to hear more. And the narrator was phenomenal! Being able to do so many different characters reliably is a great talent.

Historia
They are Hazel, James, Aubrey, and Colette. A classical pianist from London, a British would-be architect turned soldier, a Harlem-born ragtime genius in the US Army, and a Belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past. Their story, as told by goddess Aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on Mount Olympus, is filled with hope and heartbreak, prejudice and passion, and reveals that, though war is a formidable force, it's no match for the transcendent power of love.

Revisado: 03-18-21
This novel was charming and fascinating - it managed to be a WWI novel without feeling bogged down by tropes. The structure is unique and engaging; the characters are complex, sweet, and yet real. The narration and score are such a pleasure to add to an already wonderful experience. One of the best reads I’ve had in a bit.

One of my favorite Hibbert novels so far
Revisado: 02-04-21
Hibbert always nails her characters and the levels of representation she accomplishes without tokenizing are impressive. As always, her plots are realistic and provoking, her characters likable and engrossing, and her sex scenes consensual and steamy. These characters might be my favorite set so far!

Nate Davis didn't plan on returning to his hateful hometown. But then, he didn't plan on being widowed in his 20s or on his mother getting sick, either. Hannah Kabbah thought her career in childcare was over. After all, no one wants a woman with a criminal damage conviction watching their kids. But when her high school crush returns to Ravenswood with two kids in tow, she gets the second chance she never dreamed of.

Love these romances
Revisado: 01-28-21
Hibbert writes fun, but very realistic and healthy, romances that are somehow both light and powerful. She brings real people to romance - her characters are emotionally expressive, diverse in so many ways, and humanly flawed. Her sex scenes are steamy, consensual, and positive. I love her work for my go-to “fun read” and Channing does such a fantastic job narrating!
