Historia
Have you ever wondered what country had the first truly global empire? Then pay attention... Folks used to say that the “Sun never sets on the British Empire” as a means of declaring Britain’s greatness. But it was the Portuguese who forged the first truly global empire. The major dominions of the Portuguese wrapped around the globe in a straight line, from Brazil to Angola, from Mozambique to India, and all the way to Macau. With its dominion under multiple time zones, the Sun, in fact, never did set on the Portuguese Empire.

Revisado: 03-31-25
Poor writing style and editorializing passing as history characterize this "history" of Portugal. On the plus side, there's not much of it.money? "Captivating History" series doesn't even offer an author's name. Was it churned out by an unreviewed AI just to make miney?

Havana Nocturne takes listeners back to Cuba in the years when it was a veritable devil's playground for mob leaders Meyer Lansky and Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Thanks to strong ties with the island's brutal dictator, President Batista, the mob soon owned the biggest luxury hotels and casinos and launched an unprecedented tourist boom. But their dreams collided with those of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and others.

Historia
When an Israeli tech executive disappears from Charles de Gaulle airport with a woman in red at his side, logic dictates youthful indiscretion. But Israel is on a state of high alert nonetheless. And for Commissaire Léger of the Paris Police Force, all coincidences are suspect. When a second young Israeli from the flight is kidnapped, this time at gunpoint from his hotel room, his suspicions are confirmed - and a diplomatic crisis looms.

READ, DO NOT LISTEN, TO THIS BOOK
Revisado: 04-17-23
It is incumbent on audiobook performers to learn foreign words in the books they are performing, especially if there are many in the same language. The French pronunciations by the reader, Rosie Akerman, are mediocre, but the Hebrew is horrible. The story is great.

Historia
This enchanting true story, written when the author was 93, is a moving tale of working-class life, the social divide, and forbidden love on the eve of the first World War. The narrow street on which Harry grew up appeared identical to countless other working-class English neighborhoods, except for the invisible wall that ran down the center of the street, dividing the Jewish families on one side from the Christians on the other.

Virtually every Hebrew and Yiddish word in this book (of which there are many) is mispronounced. The narrator just didn't care about preparing. Read it. don't listen to -- this wonderful book.

Historia
In Why We’re Polarized, Klein reveals the structural and psychological forces behind America’s descent into division and dysfunction. Neither a polemic nor a lament, this book offers a clear framework for understanding everything from Trump’s rise to the Democratic Party’s leftward shift to the politicization of everyday culture. America is polarized, first and foremost, by identity. Everyone engaged in American politics is engaged, at some level, in identity politics.

READ THIS BOOK, DO NOT LISTRN TO IT
Revisado: 11-19-22
This book is the perfect example of why authors should not be permitted to narrate their own books. The book is extremely interesting and well written. However the author makes it downright unpleasant to listen to. He makes snarky laughs on almost every page. He talks too fast. He swallows his words. It's just plain poor narration.

Historia
There was a time when being an "Arab" didn't mean you were necessarily Muslim. It was a time when Oscar Hayoun, a Jewish Arab, strode along the Nile in a fashionable suit, long before he and his father arrived at the port of Haifa to join the Zionist state only to find themselves hosed down with DDT and then left unemployed on the margins of society. In that time, Arabness was a mark of cosmopolitanism, of intellectualism.

Why Authors Shouldnt Read
Revisado: 09-19-20
I do not doubt the authenticity of the author's experience. And I certainly did learn a few things from this book. But his bitterness and negativity overflowed.
And from a performance you point, well it was just seriously disappointing.

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

Historia
Why is religion still around in the 21st century? Why do so many still believe? In Why Religion? Elaine Pagels looks to her own life to help address these questions. These questions took on a new urgency for Pagels when dealing with unimaginable loss - the death of her young son, followed a year later by the shocking loss of her husband. Here she interweaves a personal story with the work that she loves, illuminating how religious traditions have shaped how we understand ourselves; how we relate to one another; and how to get through the most difficult challenges we face.
