Historia
Yash Raje, California’s first Indian-American gubernatorial candidate, has always known exactly what he wants - and how to use his privileged background to get it. He attributes his success to a simple mantra: control your feelings and you can control the world. But when a hate crime at a rally critically injures his friend, Yash’s easy life suddenly feels like a lie, his control an illusion. When he tries to get back on the campaign trail, he blacks out with panic.

Choosing between duty and love
Revisado: 02-12-22
Yash has it all, a rising campaign and a best friend arrangement that keeps both their parents out of their personal lives. After an assassination trip turns his world upside down, he is forced to seek help to rejoin his campaign. India has the skills to help him face his anxiety, but is also the only woman who ever made him feel.
This is the third in a series and I read it out of order for a book club. I immediately started the first and am looking forward to the rest of the series. This book stood alone well but would fit nicely in the published order as well.

Chloe definitely gets a life
Revisado: 02-08-22
One liner: Chloe develops a plan to get a life and life happens and derails her plan.
Chloe develops a list of goals to get her to help her be the person she wants to be. She wants to live outside the four walls that feel as confining as the illness that plagues her. Some of her more adventurous goals are inspired by the handsome redhead that manages her building. What they have is nothing short of electric. But Chloe and Red have both been burned before and they struggle to overcome the baggage those old relationships left them with.
While you yell at the main characters every time they react poorly, you can empathize with the painful place from which they are reacting. You root for them.
The book is pretty steamy so don’t listen without headphones. I will definitely go with the e-book for the rest of the series.

Historia
Finlay Donovan is - once again - struggling to finish her next novel and keep her head above water as a single mother of two. On the bright side, she has her live-in nanny and confidant Vero to rely on, and the only dead body she's dealt with lately is that of her daughter's pet goldfish. On the not-so-bright side, someone out there wants her ex-husband, Steven, out of the picture. Permanently. Whatever else Steven may be, he's a good father, but saving him will send her down a rabbit hole of soccer moms disguised as hit-women.

Finlay Donovan does it again!
Revisado: 02-06-22
We rejoin Finlay and Vero about a month after their first book wrapped up. This is definitely a series so read the first book first if you don't want to be spoiled or confused throughout the entire book. The first book ended with a huge cliffhanger that someone had put out a hit on Finlay's ex-husband. Unfortunately, there are just too many suspects when this book starts. Naturally Finlay doesn't want her kids anywhere near him, but seriously, how do you explain that in a way that doesn't make him think she is just being spiteful and trying to keep him away from the kids. Finlay does her best to save him, figure out who is trying to kill him, keep her kids safe, stay clear of the mobster that knows she knows too many of his secrets, and figure out whether she likes the law student or cop more and whether there could be a future with either one given her connections.
There is a style in this series that I love. Finlay is a cozy mystery writer and her stories bear a strong resemblance to her real life. This allows the writer to preview so many things through conversations between Finlay and her editor. It is a thoroughly entertaining twist on cozy mysteries that I truly enjoy. This book delves into Finlay's relationships (romantic and non-romantic) and allows Finlay to try to control her situation more than she could in the first book. But she is still smack dab in the middle of something bigger after the loose ends around her husband's hit contract is solved. Thankfully, the story is set up perfectly for a third book.
I am thankful for the electronic copy of the book that I received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I purchased the audible version on my own.

A Great Family Road Trip Book
Revisado: 02-06-22
One liner: A Young Boy struggles with family issues and finding a shared love of cards with a female friend.
Content Warning: Contains descriptions of alcohol and drug use, gambling, family separation, bullying, and child abandonment. I don't usually provide content warnings because there are so many I could miss if I don't notice them and the inclusion of content warnings implies that all are included. These are the ones I noticed while reading with my son and not meant to be a comprehensive list. The author handles the discussions compassionately and from multiple viewpoints.
Ant comes from a long line of card players and loves playing with his friends. But during the tournament last year he choked and ran away, and everyone remembers. And keeps reminding him. When the new girl, Shirley, beats him and his buddy, he has respect for her talents (even though she might not have played honestly). When his friend gets grounded and has to miss the tournament, he asks her to be his partner. A fact the bullies at the school find as fodder. When he uncovers a secret his dad is keeping and everything at home turns upside down, he has to deal with old secrets coming to light and how to move forward. Shirley proves as good a friend as she is a card player.

Fun, quick, sweet romance
Revisado: 02-03-22
One liner: A Hollywood heartthrob escapes to the middle of nowhere to recharge and falls in love with the way of life and the owner of the B&B where he is staying.
Andrew works hard for his Hollywood fame and lifestyle. While he enjoys acting, he is starting to burn out on all the rest. Since he long ago gave up the home he never had time to visit, his assistant squirrels him away in a B&B she knows about in the middle of Michigan. He wants to avoid all people for his month there.
Gran hosts the B&B and her cooking is just what Andrew needs to rebuild. Sage runs the commercial side of the farm and Andrew didn't expect her. She really doesn't even seem to care who he is. Which is what he was looking for. But somehow it doesn't feel right from her. So he convinces her to let him work the farm while he is in town. And their friendship blossoms into something neither is ready to give up in under a month.
This was a fun, quick, sweet read. The extended timing between chapters can be a little distracting for listeners but if you play it at a faster playback you do get used to it.

The honeymoon was better without the runaway groom
Revisado: 01-31-22

Annie is shocked when Alexander leaves her at the alter. His parent’s offer her the exotic honeymoon anyway to try to begin to apologize for the son’s horrible behavior. After running into a friend from college, Patrick, who encourages her to go anyway “because you only live once,” she seizes the opportunity and invites him to go with her. Revisado: 01-31-22
One liner: A librarian running for mayor is framed for murder, but who is the real murderer?
In the twelfth Library Lover’s Mystery series, Lindsay has to clear Ms. Cole as a murder suspect. Of a murder that took place in the library parking lot!
This is such a fun series. I love seeing the characters grow and form deeper relationships. In this book, we get to learn more about Ms. Cole and why she was so lemony when Lindsay came to town.
