Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

Historia
Cat's Cradle is Vonnegut's satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. An apocalyptic tale of this planet's ultimate fate, it features a little person as the protagonist; a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer; and a vision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny.

I’d recommend reading it instead, but the audiobook wasn’t bad
Revisado: 05-26-23
This is my favorite novel ever written, when I first read it in paper form, I was in awe on every page. This audiobook is serviceable and enjoyable enough, but nothing can replace the thrill of reading it on the page. However, if you’ve already read it in print, I recommend listening to it here as well.

Historia
What happened to Islamic reform? Why have al Qaeda and Boko Haram become the faces of contemporary Islam? Why has the Arab Spring devolved into a battle over sharia law? Continuing her personal journey from a deeply religious Islamic upbringing to a post at Harvard and American citizenship, the New York Times best-selling author of Infidel and Nomad crafts a powerful call for an Islamic reformation as the only way to end the current wave of global violence and repression of women.

Important perspective, if a bit dry
Revisado: 06-30-18
Ayaan’s other books are more personal and riveting page-to-page, but Heretic is full of fascinating historical details, and thoughts that are worth hearing. If you like her other books or are interested in Islam in general, this is absolutely worth a listen!

Historia
Hirsi Ali tells the stirring story of her search for a new life in America in this vivid philosophical memoir, picking up where Infidel left off. Nomad is a portrait of a family torn apart by the clash of civilizations. But it is also a touching, uplifting, and often funny account of one woman’s discovery of today’s America.

Thoughtful reflections on culture and religion
Revisado: 04-22-18
Ayaan’s story is incredibly inspiring, and it is fascinating to listen to her dive deeper into the details than she did in Infidel. Nomad is not AS good as Infidel, but it’s a great read/listen nonetheless.

This New York Times best-seller is the astonishing life story of award-winning humanitarian Ayaan Hirsi Ali. A deeply respected advocate for free speech and women's rights, Hirsi Ali also lives under armed protection because of her outspoken criticism of the Islamic faith in which she was raised.

Gripping, invigorating, emotionally moving memoir
Revisado: 02-14-18
Ayaan Hirsi Ali writes with such clarity humanity, and tenderness about her tumultuous but incredible life. I read this book in paperback 4 years ago, but listening to her read it herself was moving in a different way. I cried at least 4 times. She is such an incredibly inspiring figure. I can’t recommend it too highly.

Historia
Andrei Lankov has gone where few outsiders have ever been. A native of the former Soviet Union, he lived as an exchange student in North Korea in the 1980s. He has studied it for his entire career, using his fluency in Korean and personal contacts to build a rich, nuanced understanding. In The Real North Korea, Lankov substitutes cold, clear analysis for the overheated rhetoric surrounding this opaque police state.

A good read for people with a deep interest in DPRK
Revisado: 11-30-17
The last 20-30% of the book meanders a bit, but overall, it’s very fascinating. I would recommend it to people with a deep fascination with DPRK, but it’s not a good first book on North Korea. I’d say that it’s too dry and academic for people who are only casually interested in the subject. If you’ve watched all the Vice docs, everything on Netflix, and maybe read a book or two about NK, I definitely recommend it though!
