Weirdly Fantastic
Revisado: 06-02-24
I was recommended this book in a weird-fiction writing group when I asked for authors similar to China Mieville, and I was not disappointed. If you enjoy strange stories, I too highly recommend this collection.

Very Unique
Revisado: 05-16-24
A strange but fascinating essay/story about a woman who falls in love with a convenience store (and discusses sleeping with it). It’s all in Japanese and very short so it made for great, entertaining listening practice.

I liked the strange mix of characters, demons and aliens, intermingling with Earthlings on Earth. It was a unique, fun, listen. The narration was top notch.

Born just 10 months apart, July and September are thick as thieves, never needing anyone but each other. Now, following a case of school bullying, the teens have moved away with their single mother to a long-abandoned family home near the shore. In their new, isolated life, July finds that the deep bond she has always shared with September is shifting in ways she cannot entirely understand. A creeping sense of dread and unease descends inside the house.

An Eerie Mystery
Revisado: 04-07-24
This was an eerie story about two sisters. I loved the blend of unsettling language with elements of weirdness and mystery. I’ll be looking for more books by this author. Highly recommended.

Historia
The legendary writer Patricia Highsmith is best remembered today for her chilling psychological thrillers The Talented Mr. Ripley and Strangers on a Train. A critically acclaimed, best-selling author in Europe, Highsmith has for too long been underappreciated in the United States. Eleven is Highsmith's first collection of short stories, an arresting group of dark masterpieces of obsession and foreboding, violence and instability.

Eerie Tension
Revisado: 03-12-24
This is a fantastic collection of stories. They’re all different but have a common thread of unsettling eeriness running through them. I found it curious that two of the stories dealt with murderous snails and after a quick search discovered that Patricia Highsmith kept snails as a pet. A perfect fit for this collection.

Quirky and Fun
Revisado: 12-31-23
This was a fun listen. The story follows unique, quirky characters finding their way through life. At the same time it’s a subtle critique of social conformity. This book makes me want to read more of Murata Sayaka’s work.

Intriguing psychological mystery right from the start. Each chapter was a curious new layer. The narrator did a great job with the different voices for different characters as well.

Historia
Eight-year-old Murgatroyd Floyd doesn't fit in - not as a blue-eyed blonde living in Singapore, not in school, and certainly not with his aloof expatriate parents, who seem determined to make his life even harder. Unbeknownst to him, there's a reason why he's always the odd boy out: he is an Oddfit, a rare type of human with access to the More Known World, a land invisible to most people.

I loved this story and narration. It’s rare that they both come together so well. It’s fun and quirky and weird in just the right way. I immediately went to buy the next audiobook in the series but see that it’s no longer available. Even the paper books are no longer available on Amazon. Very disappointing, Why?? Take my money.

Upon its first publication, this path breaking book launched an explosion of interest in how Eastern spirituality can enhance Western psychology. Since then, the worlds of Buddhism and psychotherapy have been forged into a revolutionary new understanding of what constitutes a healthy emotional life. In his insightful introduction, Mark Epstein reflects on this revolution and considers how it is likely to evolve in the future.

Where Psychotherapy Meets Buddhism
Revisado: 06-23-23
This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in the intersection of psychotherapy and Buddhism. There are obvious differences but there is also significant overlap. I’ve read books by other psychotherapists on this same topic (Hayao Kawai’s and Erich Fromm’s are both great) and it’s interesting to see them each make unique points. They’re all highly recommended.
