Historia
Before he became the nation's favourite Mammy, Brendan O'Carroll was known, simply as Brendan. He's the youngest of eleven children from a poor family in Dublin, he's a boy whose father died when he was just nine years old; he's someone whose hope and determination meant he never gave up. Throughout the tough moments, Brendan always had humour and a good story to tell alongside the ever-guiding inspiration of his own Mammy, a formidable figure who became Ireland's first female Labour MP, all whilst raising eleven children by herself.

This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

Very interesting book, well narrated in a calm voice, Great examples, and actionable tips. I was much better able to understand the role of dopamine in addiction, cravings, and reward after listening to this.

Historia
Kadir Nelson, one of this generation's most accomplished, award-winning artists, has created an epic yet intimate introduction to the history of America and African Americans, from colonial days through the civil rights movement. Written in the voice of an "Everywoman," an unnamed narrator whose forebears came to this country on slave ships and who lived to cast her vote for the first African American president, Heart and Soul touches on some of the great transformative events and small victories of that history.

Wonderful Overview for All Ages
Revisado: 08-28-22
Despite its brevity, this audio presentation delivers a great package of American history, and it is American history, via beautiful and direct narration by an elder female relative to her young African American family member.
African Americans can be deeply proud of their huge impact on this nation and European and other Americans Like my self benefit from the stitching together of multiple critical milestones in this nation’s history and in African-Americans journey toward freedom and respect due. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I’m amazed at how much clearer I am now on the experience of African Americans beyond just enslavement.
Can definitely be listened to by children but perhaps children under 10 might especially benefit from family discussion along the way. Depends on the kid, of course!

Spectacular Narration, Spectacular Story!
Revisado: 02-21-22
The compelling writing combine the spectacular reading by Paul Michael make this worth your time… If you have listened to Team of Rivals or Ron Chernow audiobooks and loved the experience, you will also likely have the same with this.
Narration: extremely pleasant low male voice, wonderful ability to change voice for characters, accents, pronounce Portuguese words helped me to inhabit the points of view of each of the men who kept journals of this incredibly difficult journey.

Park & Quintal - A Great Team!
Revisado: 12-21-08
My little 4-year-old daughter and I heard the first story (stupid smelly schoolbus) from a free CD from Wendy's. We have laughed our heads off for two years now. Now she is 6, and still always asks to hear the series. We've listened to 1 through 10 so far, having purchased the 2-10 from audible.com. My daughter gets a kick out of Junie's mispronunciations and grammar snafus--no hazard that your child will learn from Junie--they really do know Junie's not perfect. Lana Quintal's voicing of all the characters is wonderful. Her comic timing, the different voices... I love to read and normally would prefer the written word, but I do believe that Quintal fully vivifies Park's wonderfully funny writing. Junie is wonderfully and sweetly feisty, and has given great satisfaction to my little one. The books can be very touching and moral, too, in the most down-to-earth way. Thanks, Wendy's, for the free first book. And thanks to Audible for having the rest of them. They have been a treasure on our commute for 2 years now.

Historia
As the individual perhaps most widely respected by the generation that founded the United States, Benjamin Franklin can fairly be described as the "Founding Godfather" of America. A gifted writer, businessman, diplomat, political mover, scientist, and inventor (not to mention a famous wit and incorrigible womanizer), Franklin towers among historical figures, but his warm humanism and intelligence cast his amazing life into undeniably human relief.

I am inspired to re-learn American History!
Revisado: 01-25-05
I now fully understand why Benjamin Franklin was presented as an important figure from early school years onward. Previously, I had only the typical jumble of images: Poor Richard's truisms, a key and a kite on a stormy night, the bifocals, the stove, and so on. Professor Brands has pulled all of these together, and so much more, to give us a wonderfully human picture of a marvelous human. (As another reviewer wrote, the flaws do add rather than subtract from the man.) And he makes clear just WHY the key and kite are special, and why Ben Franklin does not equal the frugal, self-righteous Poor Richard, among other revelations.
What I've found especially compelling, though, is Brand's explanation of, and placement of, the major events leading up to the American Revolution; from both the British and American points of view. I never fully understood the Stamp Act (why enacted), the Intolerable Acts, the dumping of tea. I just thought Britain was mean and greedy, and that also perhaps we Americans were a little nuts. Somehow, it'd escaped me that:
- Britain was deep in debt from its French and Indian War, and sought a way to pay that.
- That Parliament saw American colonists as having benefited from the years of protection at the frontier line from Indians by the British army, and that they ought to help pay for the debt caused by that.
- That the citizens in England and Scotland, in fact, paid much higher taxes than the Americans (who actually paid very little).
- and many more wonderful "ah-hah" moments.
Also, the times themselves in which Franklin lived, the conditions, the hardships and technology available, are explained in lively detail.
This lecture series might just inflame you as it did me. I have loved the many "ah hahs" Professor Brand has given me in the 7 hours.
