George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture, quoted so often that we tend to forget who wrote the original words! This must-read is also a must-listen!

A little too relevant
Revisado: 07-09-24
I really enjoyed this novel, but it made me slightly uncomfortable because it is too relevant to what’s happening globally with governments today. I am shocked that this was never required reading for me in high school or college, as it should be.

Summer Camp Horror
Revisado: 06-29-24
This was a solid summer camp horror. It had an old school slasher feel which I enjoyed but I wished it would have stayed a little more true to that. I wasn’t the biggest fan of how the story wrapped up, but I still had a good time reading it.

Historia
A disturbing tale of a young man's uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde's genius and his perversion. Oscar Wilde's scandalous best seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.

Almost Perfect
Revisado: 06-29-24
This was almost 5 stars for me, but I barely made it through Chapter 11. That chapter was long, boring, and really challenging to get through. I’m glad I kept reading though because this is now easily one of my favorite classics.it’s also pretty easy to read for a classic.

This narrator was perfection
Revisado: 06-17-24
I liked this book ok, it had a Lovecraftian horror vibe which I really enjoyed. However, I think it could have benefitted from being a little bit longer because the characters never really felt very deep and I struggled to connect with them. Overall, it read like a literary classic and because of its content may have the potential to become one.
The narrator was FANTASTIC, one of the best I’ve heard so far. Her voice gave the story so much character and depth. The performance was definitely worthy of 5-stars!

A Relevant Story
Revisado: 06-14-24
This was so good, an easy 5 stars! This book is a larger commentary on how the church treats the queer community. If you’re an avid horror reader I think you will find it to be light on some traditional horror aspects, except for the last few chapters. However, it is also a book that can easily be recommended to others that might not read horror but will appreciate the larger issues touched on in this book.
The author does some really interesting subtle things with the writing style, which I enjoyed.
A relevant and timely horror story given the current treatment of the gay community by the conservative Christian movement within the US.
I’ll definitely be checking out more work by this author as I just bought Straight.

Do your own research on this one
Revisado: 06-10-24
This book was a CHALLENGING read. I’m still conflicted on how exactly I feel about it, it doesn’t feel right to say I liked it, but I think it accomplishes what the author wanted. I would never recommend this to anyone though, honestly, you need to do your own research about if this is right for you. Heed the trigger warnings and be prepared for repulsive language that is jarring. It tackles tough issues specifically transphobia and facism, it is so much more than just a story about a haunted house, in fact that makes up only a small portion of the book. However, I really enjoyed the parts about the haunted house and feel like those parts could be enjoyed by your average horror reader. It took a while to get to those parts though, and the beginning feels a little slow. I’d probably really give this a 3.75 but feel like giving it a 3 on this app will hopefully make people do more research on this book before they decide to pick it up.

If Jen Winston knows one thing for sure, it’s that she’s bisexual. Or wait - maybe she isn’t? Actually, she definitely is. Unless...she’s not? Jen’s provocative, laugh-out-loud debut takes us inside her journey of self-discovery. Greedy follows Jen’s attempts to make sense of herself as she explores the role of the male gaze, what it means to be “queer enough”, and how to overcome bi stereotypes when you’re the posterchild for all of them: greedy, slutty, and constantly confused.

The first part of this is good but…
Revisado: 06-06-24
I liked the first few chapters which talked specifically about Biphobia and Bi-erasure however once it started to become a memoir of the author’s sex life it lost me. To be fair memoirs aren’t really my thing. However, one thing that really annoyed me is that for a book that kind of sets it up that it’s going to fight some of the stereotypes of being bisexual, personally I felt the author’s romantic trial and tribulations played into those expected stereotypes, which I felt disappointed by.

Revisado: 05-19-24
I am not typically a romance reader, outside of the LGBTQ genre anyways. But I saw this movie on a girls trip and really enjoyed the story, my family is a bunch of readers and they had all read the book and told me I should check it out because it was even better. Two years later I finally did and I was not left disappointed. This is going to likely be in my short list of faves for the year. I like that there is just a tinge of a thriller vibe in the book which I think makes it more interesting to me than most romances. Additionally, as a nature lover the setting of the swamp just feels so real to me and is intriguing to me. I just love everything about it!

Historia
One hot summer night, Lourdes, Fernanda, Ana, Perla, and Pauline hold a séance. Their tipsy laughter turns to terror when the flames burn straight through their prayer candles and Fernanda starts crawling toward her friends and chanting in Nahuatl, the language of their Aztec ancestors. Over the next few weeks, Fernanda starts acting strangely—smearing herself in black makeup, shredding her hands on rose thorns, sucking sin out of the mouths of the guilty. The local priest is convinced it's a demon, but Lourdes suspects it's something else—something far more ancient and powerful.

A Quick Possession Story
Revisado: 05-13-24
This was good! I finished this in a day although it’s relatively short. It never quite gave me the chills like I like my possession stories to do, and I wish it would have been a bit longer so the characters’ culture and story could have been more developed.
One complaint is there is some sexual content that isn’t really necessary in this story. This is a personal pet peeve of mine…I’m not a prude and I don’t mind sexual content but just didn’t think it was necessary for this story.

Adventures in the wilderness can be dramatic and deadly. Glacier National Park's death records date back to January 1913, when a man froze to death while snowshoeing between Cut Bank and St. Mary. All told, 260 people have died or are presumed to have died in the park during the first hundred years of its existence.

A Reminder if the risks of enjoying time outside
Revisado: 05-12-24
I waited a little to review this to be sure I was being fair. I don’t typically read nonfiction so I feel like it is harder for me to review it fairly, especially when this book tells the stories of those that lost their lives while in Glacier NP. I felt like more stories could have been told in more detail, however, I think if you enjoy spending time in the outdoors you’ll like this book. It reminds you that enjoying time outside comes with risks, and that given the wrong set of circumstances we could all meet our end while doing something we enjoy.
Also, I enjoy the narrators of most stories but I had a really hard time with this one. They didn’t do anything wrong just wasn’t for me.
