When the body of a journalist is found, Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is drafted from outside to head up the investigation. Inspector Jimmy Perez has been out of the loop, but his local knowledge is needed in this case, and he decides to help Willow. The dead journalist had left the islands years before to pursue his writing career. In his wake, he left a scandal involving a young girl. When Willow and Jimmy dig deeper, they realize that the journalist was chasing a story that many Shetlanders didn't want to come to the surface.

Great until the last chapter
Revisado: 03-18-23
Ann Cleeves is one of my favorite writers. I have read her books and watched her adaptations on TV. Dead Water is a steady story. Lots of twists and storylines. Almost too many characters. Enjoyable until the last chapter when the solving of the mystery is explained. The detail and rehashing of events went on way too long. Other than that criticism the book was a fantastic story.

Another good Roy Grace read
Revisado: 06-28-22
Once again Peter James scores a winner! Took me a while to get into the “guts” of the storyline, but once there I was hooked. My only constructive criticism would be- there are so many characters, the reader needs a score card to keep track of everyone. The narrator was not the best, towards the end of the book, I found myself getting irritated with the voice, and wished I had the actual book, so I wouldn’t have to listen to get to the end of the story.

Historia
North Devon is enjoying a rare hot summer with tourists flocking to its coastline. Detective Matthew Venn is called out to a rural crime scene at the home of a group of artists. What he finds is an elaborately staged murder - Dr. Nigel Yeo has been fatally stabbed with a shard of one of his glassblower daughter's broken vases. Dr. Yeo seems an unlikely murder victim. He's a good man, a public servant, beloved by his daughter. Matthew is unnerved, though, to find that she is a close friend of Jonathan, his husband.

This new series from Ann Cleeves is a hit. The main character…Matthew is becoming such a insightful detective. His mismatch homicide team is growing closer. Their commitment to solve a case makes for edge of your seat page turning.
I highly recommend this audio production.

Too many characters
Revisado: 04-22-22
This was my first Peter James book. I was intrigued by the current social issue which was the subject of this novel. Enjoyed the interaction of main character with others. My only constructive criticism of this novel is…too many characters. I felt like I needed a scoring card to keep up with them all.
I will listen to more novels by Peter James…maybe the next one will be easier for me to follow.

Disappointed
Revisado: 12-18-21
I have enjoyed so many of John Grisham’s novels for years. There have only been two which I had to forced myself to finish. The prequel to The Judge’s List was one. I hesitated but plowed into The Judge’s List. Long, drawn out and too much verbiage. In addition, the narrator made listening even more laborious.
Some lose ends were left dangling…what happened to the “secret room”?

Revisado: 11-07-18
I totally enjoyed the story, normally historical fiction is not my genre. This story by Rutherfurd travels through decades from the fur trappings of Indians on the Hudson river to the recovery of the World Trade Center. Following one family’s journey through history. Amazing story of hardships, survival and tenacity mixed with love, and family values.
Read this book•••well worth the read.

Kellerman disappoints but John Rubinstein soars
Revisado: 04-14-18
I’ve read a lot of Jonathan Kellerman’s books through the years, and always enjoyed the psychological thriller and mystery of them. But this book was so “out there” I sometimes felt like I needed a score card to keep up with the characters. Such a mixed bag of suspects, motives and scenarios. I enjoy the writing that tells the reader what Alex is thinking. He wrote: her fingers were long and thin like flash frozen French fries. But the winding around different motives and possibilities left this reader wishing the story would end.
John Rubinstein excels as the reader. Throwing his voice in chime with the “feel” of the speaker, and his ability to pause to give the listener time to take in what has just happened, is spot on.
I will try again to read/listen to another Kellerman novel - hopefully the next one will be the caliber of The Detectives, When the Bough Breaks, or Butcher’s Theatre. Great reads!

Wow what a story! I laughed, cried, felt anger and felt empathy as well as sympathy for these characters. Listened to the last chapters with regret because I knew I soon would be saying goodbye to these people!!
Excellent writing with attention to setting, moods and articulation for the reader. Writer definitely did copious research to go into the depths of the core iPod the story!
Additionally, I must give 5+ stars to the reader of this audible version -
Caroline Lee did an outstanding job reading with proper inflection and ability to make the reader feel they were right in the midst of the story and conversations.

Historia
At the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon.

I appreciate and have always enjoyed David McCullough's writings. But this book was such a disappointment to me! Dull reading, almost like a reporter would read a History Book. I finally gave up halfway in - all the facts about the dam and the town went on and on! I felt it was needless information!! Very disappointing purchase!!

Revisado: 11-28-16
Wow - another great story by Connelly! I enjoy the novel's multi storylines- some writers can't pull that off - but Connelly does it easily and without the reader feeling the need for a scorecard! Several twists and turns in the story. I enjoyed the interaction between Bosch and Mickey!! I always enjoy my virtual trips home to LA through Michael's books. Anxiously awaiting the next adventure from San Fernando!
