Historia
Computer technology has improved exponentially over the last 50 years. But the headroom for bigger and better electronic solutions is running out. Our best hope is to engage the power of quantum physics. “Quantum algorithms” had already been written long before hardware was built. These would enable, for example, a quantum computer to exponentially speed up an information search or crack the mathematical trick behind internet security.

Decent overview but lacks depth

This is oriented to people who know little
physics or computers. Wastes too much time explaining the basics, as if addressing illiterates…
this was annoying

Historia
Throughout history, technological change — whether it takes the form of agricultural improvements in the Middle Ages, the Industrial Revolution, or today’s artificial intelligence — has been viewed as a main driver of prosperity, working in the public interest. The reality, though, is that technology is shaped by what powerful people want and believe, generating riches, social respect, cultural prominence, and further political voice for those already powerful. For most of the rest of us, there is the illusion of progress.

Great insights and analysis, little thought on solutions
Revisado: 12-29-24
I wish the authors spent more time contemplating solutions to the issues they are raising. The articulation of the issues is indeed compelling

Although the content is extremely valuable, the narration puts you to sleep and the manner of exposition is almost pedantic and repetitive.

Many people today are so dazzled by the long-term potential for artificial intelligence that they overlook the much clearer and more immediate potential for a new form of "collective intelligence": the intelligence of groups of people and computers working together. In Superminds, Thomas Malone explains what we need to do to take advantage of this potential. Groundbreaking and utterly fascinating, Superminds will change the way you work - both with others and with computers - for the better.

Historia
It is an axiom of American life that advantage should be earned through ability and effort. Even as the country divides itself at every turn, the meritocratic ideal - that social and economic rewards should follow achievement rather than breeding - reigns supreme. Both Democrats and Republicans insistently repeat meritocratic notions. Meritocracy cuts to the heart of who we are. It sustains the American dream.

Verbose and tiring diagnostic, hastily, not well thought through recommendation
Revisado: 01-15-21
True work of an academic. Spends long hours stating and restating what is a good diagnosis of the problem. Twists and abuses the notion of meritocracy to the point of having a misleading title. The proposed solution is just a couple of quicks half baked ideas that may be good elements of a solution if someone bothered to think them through

Historia
For over 100 years, Insurers have stood by customers at some of the toughest moments in their lives, and helped allow people to go about their lives and pursue their business ideas without having to worry about the risks involved. Today, those customers have different expectations for how they want to do business and be served. And those expectations are changing faster than ever before. The industry has faced many headwinds, making it difficult to keep up with change - regulation, bureaucracy, system constraints, past technology project pain, thin margins, etc.

Historia
The COVID-19 outbreak has turned bedrooms into offices, pitted young against old, and widened the gaps between rich and poor, red and blue, the mask wearers and the mask haters. Some businesses - like home exercise company Peloton, video conference software maker Zoom, and Amazon - woke up to find themselves crushed under an avalanche of consumer demand. Others - like the restaurant, travel, hospitality, and live entertainment industries - scrambled to escape obliteration.
