Historia
Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once, embracing the Liberty ethos, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world’s troubles.

Compelling, Thought-Provoking Story
Revisado: 07-11-24
I could not get enough of this book. The story is engaging with well-drawn characters. I appreciate the social justice commentary and angle. The plot, while chilling, was so original. The narration was on point. I highly recommend.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Critical Exploration of Christian Nationalism
Revisado: 06-06-24
As The Heritage Foundation, Leonard Leo, and others have greatly informed our political landscape and the makeup of SCOTUS, it's never been more critical to understand the "why" and "how". In this book, Du Mez writes a well-researched exploration of the history and impact of White Evangelicalism in the U.S. This is a great companion piece to Jeff Sharlet's "The Family."
Suzie Althens does a great job narrating this book.

Masterpiece Memoir on the Struggles of Addiction
Revisado: 11-02-23
I hesitate to assign "Loved It" to this memoir, as I write this days following the heartbreaking loss of Matthew Perry. This was a hard but important listen--and the best memoir I've ever read. Matthew so eloquently expresses his vulnerability and the pain, loneliness, and shame behind the suffering. He wrote that he wanted his legacy to be that of helping others through these struggles--and with this memoir, that legacy will live on.

Must-Listen or Read for Anyone Single/Unattached
Revisado: 10-12-23
My daughter recommended this to me after a breakup--and she buys it for all her friends. Amy Chan is brilliant and her advice goes far beyond moving forward from breakups. It's a well-researched, science and psychology-based look at how we approach relationships and sex with actionable advice. The workbook has outstanding exercises. I give this 5 starts.

Historia
Women of all ages struggle with disordered eating, preoccupation with food, and body anxiety. Journalist Cole Kazdin was one such woman, and she set out to see if the impossibility of her own full recovery from an eating disorder was all in her head. Interviewing women across the country as well as the world’s most renowned researchers, she discovered that most people with eating disorders never receive treatment—the fact that she did made her one of the lucky ones.

Transformative Read
Revisado: 03-13-23
As someone who has struggled with eating disorders and disordered eating for almost my entire life, I found this to be such a powerful work. Kazdin's descriptions of her purging episodes and those intrusive thoughts we constantly try to drown out were raw.For those of us who have struggled or continue to struggle, the accounts can be difficult to read. I took my time, sometimes, revisiting when I felt ready. The personal narratives added so much beyond being an indictment of the diet industry and lack of resources for treatment and research. Eating disorders are a lonely and terrifying place. Reading about Kazdin's challenges made me validated and less alone. With a 50/50 shot at being "cured" at best (less if you didn't receive early treatment), EDs are a chronic condition. You take one day at a time. 24/7 messaging from the diet industry and even one comment can lead to a tailspin of intrusive thoughts. Kazdin's criticism of the multi-billion dollar dieting and "wellness" industry is compelling. For those of us who struggle every day, tracking points or green and red foods, steps, etc. can be a significant trigger to obsessing over calories, our bodies, meal skipping/fasting. What;s Eating Us should be required reading for anyone who works with patients who might be struggling with an ED or disordered eating.

Historia
I have three months to write the last book of my life. Three months to confess the details of that day, and how it changed everything for me. My name is Helena Ross. I've written 15 romance novels, 10 of which have become international best sellers. But this one isn't a romance, no happily ever after in place. This novel holds only the truth, which I have run away from for four years. The truth, which I have hidden from the police, from my loved ones, from the world.

Painfully bad narration.
Revisado: 04-28-18
The narration of this book moved between an automated Siri type voice, southern drawls, and a strong NY accent. The worst part about audiobooks is the switching back and forth between voices and this book was an awful example of that. I couldn’t connect with Helena or the story because of the narration.
