Narrator is completely emotionless. It’s like a computer. It lasts less than an hour. Don’t waste your credits.

I'm very familiar with the story. The narration takes this to a new level. Highly recommend.

I may have been looking for suspense or horror, given the author. But it was kind of a morality story of changing one's outlook. The ending is very predictable, and there are no reasons given for the protagonist's issue. I was disappointed.

The narrator has a slight lisp, which distracts from the narration. The story is thin, and could have come from basic research. Nothing new or in depth here.

The narrator does a splendid job of keeping characters voices distinct and separate from each other in a large ensemble. The story was kinda meh. All the women are asleep and they're the only ones who are civilized and men are at best ineffective and at worst violent animals. As to what the inciting incident was - seems to have disappeared in a magical poof. The ending is torturous. An hour or so of a summary of each character's life after the story. The bad ones have become good, the good ones are ambivalent, some of them die, etc. This novel could have been 23 hours without losing anything in the plot.

Overall - if you're hungering for your Stephen King fix, this is good enough. It's got plenty of "ew, OMG" moments. It's nowhere near the quality of works done by SK without a co-author, but if your expectations are to have a read from an emerging author who needs a few false starts before coming into his own, you'll enjoy it well enough.

Pretty Good Story, Great Performance

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book, with reservations. The story is pretty good, and the style is close to Doyle's. However, it does become repetitive after a point (if one more character ejaculates instead of any other verb, I may lose my mind).

Would you be willing to try another book from Daniel D. Victor? Why or why not?

Probably not. This one dragged after a bit and I became bored with it.

What about Ben Carling’s performance did you like?

Carling was amazing. When one character switch to another, the transition was seamless and obvious. There was never any confusion about which was speaking. The accents were consistent throughout, and the style was engaging. I would definitely listen to other books with this narrator. I've listened to a lot of audiobooks over the 12 years I've been a member of Audible, and I rank Ben Carling among the top three.

Gripping, believable. I couldn't wait to get into the car and hear the rest of it every evening!

Very Preachy

I expected to get a true crime book, but instead I got an evangelical with a bible quote at the start of every chapter. As the book progresses, we learn more and more about the author's christianity and not much about the crime, trial, motives, etc. Good if you want a sermon; not so great for a true crime accounting.

Good Story, Weird Narration

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-01-09

The story was absolutely gripping. It is a well written factual telling of the story, without being overwrought or apologizing for the actions of the Barrows. However, the narrator is distracting. He has some kind of strange lisp or slur. "Clyde" is pronounced "Dide" consistently, and there are other oddities. If you can get past the delivery, this book is great.

Nothing New Here

All this book does is recycle news reports and comment postings from blogs. There are no interviews with victims or family members, deep background, history (how could this have been foreseen), etc. It's just a quickie grab for some of the Madoff money before the phenom is over. Highly disappointing.
