Not my cup of tea! Inaccurate and a hug missing gap in the story after (spoiler alert!) Annie dies. Come on, already. A 6th grader would have done better.

I listened until the end because the reviews were so impressive. I just thought there was too much sex. I understand there was/is violence in these situations, however the sexual descriptions even when it wasn't leading up to an abusive event was too much...over the top. The lesson is a good one, luckily I do not need to identify with this story. I do not think I will pursue "It starts with us".

I was a young pregnant mother during Viet Nam and mostly I remember praying that my brothers would not be drafted AND they weren't. I remember being transfixed to the nightly news but forgot all the lies we were told. I NEVER thought of the women who went over there and I am so grateful to Ms. Hannah for enlightening me in my dotage.
Her books are always well researched and a joy to read. What bothered me about this one is how every reader (I am practically positive) knew beyond a doubt that Frankie was lied to. We readers knew he was married and yet this smart. savvy young woman went on believing he was single. Those chapters were too much soap opera for me and could easily have been left out. Other than that, yahoo for The Women. And I should add that I could listen to Julia Whelan read a grocery list.!!

If you need to lighten up a bit, this author will have you laughing, smiling, and just generally cracking up. She even has recipes. I am a northern Michigan "girl" who knows little of the southern belles' mores, but now I want all my friends to be Sweet Potato Queens! If you listen to nothing else in this audio, be absolutely sure to listen to or read the last few minutes. Wonderful philosophy to live by!

Do not waste your time

I listened to this because I loved other books by this author. NOT THIS ONE! I kept thinking it would get better so I slogged on and on. Well, it did not get better. She could have told this story in two chapters. There was no character development and mostly focused on opiates and rehab, etc. All important stuff, but it really dragged on and on. If you like talking to teenagers on dope, you will love this! The narrator was terrific, that much credit I can give. Perhaps why I kept listening.

This Pulitzer is probably the worst book EVAH! Boring story, boring readers. Great vocabulary but absolutely not a story you jimp into and get lost. It is more of a chronical. I will never get those 10 hrs and 21 mins back again. A real waste of my time.
