DS George Cross is a highly intelligent police homicide detective in Avon, England. He has the highest solve rate in the force by far. He is also on the spectrum. Author Tim Sullivan brilliantly develops murder mysteries with added insight into autism, how Cross thinks and feels. Cross's female police partner helps him learn how his obsessive habits, words and actions affect others, and the reverse. It's best to read the first three books in the series in order to get the full effect of his differences and growth. But The Patient can stand alone. I was blown away and moved to tears more than once. Audio performance is perfect.

Performance was monotonous. Reader was ready to understand with a good voice but used very little inflection.

In her descriptive, flowing writing style, deep and insightful character development, brilliantly evocative setting in small- town Ireland, and relationships : of a troubled teenaged girl with a fatherly and caring retired detective, families and friends. It's a mystery novel but much more, the sequel to French's The Searcher, which must be read first. I laughed, winced, and cried during the perfect narration of Roger Clark.

It made me feel dirty and sick. Metaphors and similes were laughable. Irrelevant details. Outlandish story and demonizing of people in foster care. Grammatical errors. Narrated woodenly without emotion.

The threads that connect us to each other in spite of our differences. The prejudice and injustice that live on when different races and cultures try to live together, especially in America.
There are so many characters, so much detail, so many background stories, that I found it hard to remember them and follow the story, especially on Audible. But the theme was crystal clear and the ending was perfect.

Wonderful story, hard to hear audio

As in the first two books, the four senior sleuths and associated characters are involved in another murder case that is quite a romp. They are well defined and special in their own ways, funny, flawed, and human. The plot is quite clever and there are surprises as well as tender moments. But I couldn't catch the audio so much of the time that I almost gave up more than once. Especially while driving.
The narrator, Fiona, is good except that, for some reason, she chose to read much of the book (mostly Joyce's diary) in a whisper. So much air comes out with each word. I implore Audible to make sure narration can be heard with ease in reasonable listening spaces without turning up the volume full blast.

The mundane moments of life become dramatically vivid and meaningful as an older woman and a teenager become friends in a terminal care center. Perfect narrators.

Life enriching. Charming. So glad it was recommended to me. An archeologist in Denmark and farmer's wife in England begin a correspondence that becomes life changing.
