A romance in a fascinating world
Revisado: 08-07-24
I enjoy the novels of Samaria, with rich world building and believable characters. Rachel is stubborn enough to be frustrating to the reader, with her sheer mulish contrariness. Her history explains why she is that way, having lacked agency over much of her life. The story is engaging, and well worth a listen. The reader does a good job, with enough variation between character voices to help distinguish them. I did play it at 1.1x speed, but I often do that with audio books.

Historia
Anna May Jones is the daughter of a coal miner, but a sickly constitution has kept her confined to the house for most of her life. Hoping to improve her daughter's health—and lessen the burden on their family—Anna's mother sends her to live with her Aunt Jinny, a witchy-woman and an Elemental Master, in a holler outside of Ducktown.

Nice change of pace for the Elemental Masters series
Revisado: 05-15-24
Set in eastern Tennessee with an excellent narrator, this story combines the mining history of the region with the classic fairy tale elements of this series. My folks retired in that area, and the descriptions and narration brought me right back there.

Historia
Jethri has inherited a mission from his father, a plan that will allow family Loop ships like the one he grew up on to survive the encroachment of Rostov’s Dust. In this, he’s backed by several prominent Looper families who are scheduled to meet and plan at the South Axis Trade Fair. In what seems to be a fortunate pairing of missions, Master Trader ven'Deelin sees Jethri become lead trader on his own small ship, which is scheduled to arrive at the South Axis Fair.

One story thread dropped abruptly
Revisado: 01-11-23
This book follows two viewpoint characters, alternating between them. One of them is abruptly dropped. We hear what happened, but never return to that character. The remainder of the book follows Jethri, with a bit from the shipmates of our missing character. It is possible that a future book will follow up, but the disconnect felt jarring to me. Aside from that, I enjoyed the book.
