Historia
Despite the horror of seeing 15-month-old Elizabeth slip away into autism, her mother knew that her bright little girl was still in there. When Elizabeth eventually learned to communicate, first by using a letterboard and later by typing, the poetry she wrote became proof of a glorious, life-affirming victory for this young girl and her family. I Am in Here is the spiritual journey of a mother and daughter who refuse to give up hope.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Creative but lacks realism and accuracy
Revisado: 11-13-20
Cussy Mary Carter wants to help her ailing coal miner father, really she does, but her disconcerting streak of independence insists on showing up. For one thing, Cussy is a pack horse librarian, earning $28 a month, and that will no longer be possible once he marries her off. Still, he persists in that effort to protect her reputation and her future. She does her best to run off the suitors. The distinctive blue color of her skin adds to his difficulties in this endeavor. Alas, one suitor comes along who is too charmed by the 10-acre dowry he offers to discourage. The marriage lasts only until consummation, when Cussy is seriously injured and the new husband perishes in mysterious circumstances. Further trouble arrives in the person of the dead husband's cousin, Preacher Frasier, who pursues Cussy Mary to "drive out the devil" by sexually assaulting her. Cussy Mary's mule dispatches the man, and the sheriff advises Mary and her father to bury the body and say nothing. A doctor from Lexington tries to help Cussy Mary by providing a treatment that removes the blue color from her skin.
While the premise of this historical novel is interesting, based on the existence of the Blue Fugates, an extended family living in isolated Troublesome Creek, Kentucky, the recording disappoints. The dialogue is a little too exaggerated to give an impression of reality. Accents are notoriously difficult to perform convincingly, and this performance fails miserably. The other major problem is with the timeline of the plot. The packhorse library program ended in 1943, when WPA funding dried up. The medical treatment for the Fugates' condition was not discovered until 1960, 17 years later. While the author alludes to this in her concluding chapter, the discrepancy made it increasingly difficult for me to take the story seriously.
The book deals with the consequences of prejudice against people who are perceived to be different from the norm. It has much to recommend it but lacks accuracy. In addition to this, there is very little character development. This makes the characters feel shallow and underdeveloped.
