Out of necessity, Dorothy Sayers takes creative liberties with the Gospel account, but on the whole she made a great effort to be faithful to the Biblical account. It's a worthwhile listen, putting the life of Jesus in somewhat more modern vernacular and helping to identify with the emotions of the real people of that time in history.

Children of Time is a very creative story. There are no over used sci-fi plots and Adrian certainly kept me engaged and anticipating what would go wrong next.

But in reality the creativity and skilled writing is just a vehicle for discussing social issues. Why not? If you are going to read a book, you might as well read one that has something to say. The primary social issues that this book tackles are:
1) Pollution - When talking about the distant future, this one is not hard to bring in, so this may have just come along for the ride.
2) Religion - This is a minor theme, but in Adrian's world religion exists solely as a comfort in troubled times. Salvation comes only through hard work, sacrifice, and science.
3) Gender Equality - This is a major theme. Among the humans the story handles it quite naturally without any preaching (the lead character is male, and mostly helpless, it is the secondary character, the strong and decisive woman who always saves the day). Among the aliens it is not handles so gracefully and does very nearly fall into long speeches.
4) The Human tendency toward greed and fighting - This is the other major theme. Humans are so selfish and violent that they have driven the race to near extinction and they are in danger of doing it again. I found Adrian's proposed cure to be nice, but overly simplified.

Well researched weakly presented

The information presented here is thorough and useful. But but the constant jumping back and forth between foreshadowing and the current series of events is confusing at least in an audiobook

Great depiction of Chinese Culture

Intriguing look into the farming culture in China. I enjoyed most of the book, but the central plot of pursuing personal desire to the detriment of those who should be loved was justifiably painful.

this is fiction in his best form fiction that makes us think hard about reality. It challenges us to think and to change.

Very important history

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-24-09

This book is worth reading. It is well written and an entertaining read (despite being written for children and teenagers). Most important though, this book does a powerful job of showing just how precious our freedom is and how dearly it has been bought. This is not a book about wars and nations, it is a book about individuals who were brave enough to make a difference.

An analysis of Lincoln's life, not a history

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-24-09

Mr. Miller assumes that we already know President Lincoln's history well and so often only alludes to events and speeches rather then tell about them. Most of the time seems to be spent in deep analysis of consequences and import, rather than describing the actual history. This book would probably be much more fascinating to someone who already knows Lincolns history well. -- Disclaimer: I had to stop listening after the 2nd or 3rd chapter, because I did not know my history well enough for this to be much use to me.

Fascinating story

The Charlie Wilson's War is a fascinating story, especially because of its applicability to the current war on terror. My primary reservation in recommending this book is that it uses very strong language frequently.
