Historia
A decade ago, Tokyo Police Detective Kyoichiro Kaga went to collect the ashes of his recently deceased mother. Years before, she ran away from her husband and son without explanation or any further contact, leaving her estranged son with many unanswered questions. Now in Tokyo, Michiko Oshitani is found dead many miles from home. Strangled to death, left in the bare apartment rented under a false name by a man who has disappeared without a trace. Oshitani lived far away in Sendai, with no known connection to Tokyo—and neither her family nor friends have any idea why she would have gone there.

Great story, awful narration,
Revisado: 06-16-24
I got through it as I am a fan of the author, but the narrator uses the same inflection no matter what he is reading, and it is really grating.

Historia
"That's not my sister." Overwhelmed by shock and relief, those are the only words Deven can muster when she is called to identify the body of a suicide victim. A body she was informed was her sister, Kennedy. But as she stares at the lifeless stranger, she's filled with questions: Who is this woman? Why was Deven listed as family? And most important, where is Kennedy? Her intuition tells her just one thing: this can't be a total coincidence.

Mediocre, cliched and poorly narrated
Revisado: 11-09-23
I pushed through a large part of this book to see if it suffered only from the poor narration, but the writing is also pretty bad. Don't bother

Too many quotes starting every chapter
Revisado: 10-05-22
All the quotes became annoying, despite the great narration. Is the author trying to prove she is erudite? Ignorable in print, but not when listening - or you need fast forward a lot.

Historia
Part human comedy and part mystery, Lies the Mushroom Pickers Told is an enthralling, masterful story about what holds a village together and what keeps people apart. When journalist Patrick Bracken returns to Gohen, the Irish village where he was born, he knows the eyes of the townspeople are on him. He has come home to investigate two deaths that happened decades earlier when he was a child, deaths that were ruled accidental.

took a very funny clever book down. No emotion in the reading, nor phrasing, so it was a monotonous reading, when the book is nothing like that. Better to read the novel.

Tragically, they come from two different worlds. Elias is a Christian Arab living on the eastern side of the newly divided city, and Lila is a Jew living on the western side. A growing conflict between their cultures casts a heavy shadow over the region and their burgeoning relationship. Between them lie not only a wall of stone and barbed wire but also the bitter enmity of two nations at war.

Needs a good editor
Revisado: 06-03-21
The underlying history of Jerusalem is the best part of this novel. The love story drivelled on and might have remained compelling if 2/3rds of it was edited out - we got she was the love of his life in the first few chapters

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.
