Historia
Viennese ideas saturate the modern world. From California architecture to Hollywood Westerns, modern advertising to shopping malls, orgasms to gender confirmation surgery, nuclear fission to fitted kitchens—every aspect of our history, science, and culture is in some way shaped by Vienna. Richard Cockett gives us the entirety of an extraordinary story of how one city made the modern world—and how we all remain inescapably Viennese.

The Impact of Red Vienna on our World
Revisado: 05-28-25
Advertising, free markets, Hollywood movies and innovation in mental health and sexuality research, well explained by the author. Political insight abounds. I learned.
The publisher(s), however should hang their heads in shame over totally failing to have the narrator pronounce words he’s clearly unfamiliar with, ruining much of the story and rendering other parts nearly incomprehensible. California’s Esalen, as just one example, becomes Ass-Lon! Good author, horrible publisher. Audible should be ashamed to release such a poor production of a good work. I’m glad I listed. But am happy it’s over!

Great book. The wrong narrator
Revisado: 10-23-24
The brilliant, kind endearing Sachs read without the passion and joy that inspires us. Still worthwhile because the content is so interesting and informative and memorable, like the story of Einstein s dream of riding a light beam. If only it was read in a voice more like Oliver’.

Historia
Internationally best-selling novelist Irvin D. Yalom explores the mindsets of two men separated by 300 years. Using his skills as a psychiatrist, he explores the inner lives of Baruch Spinoza, the Jewish 17th-century secular philosopher, and of Alfred Rosenberg, outspoken Nazi ideologue, faithful servant of Hitler, the main author of racial policy for the Third Reich, and a godless mass murderer....

Historia
Here is an extraordinary portrait of one of the most complicated - and misunderstood - figures among the Founding Fathers. In 1804, while serving as vice president, Aaron Burr fought a duel with his political nemesis, Alexander Hamilton, and killed him. In 1807, he was arrested, tried, and acquitted of treason. In 1833, Burr is newly married, an aging statesman considered a monster by many. But he is determined to tell his own story, and he chooses to confide in a young New York City journalist. Burr is the first novel in Gore Vidal's Narratives of Empire series.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen to learn about the history of a vilified, brilliant, and complicated man and his many compatriots. I recommend the Wikipedia entry on this book for additional insights.

Historia
Tepper enjoys sitting in his car, reading his newspaper in peace. His car always seems to be parked in a prime spot and other drivers want to know if Tepper is going out. He isn't. This drives some people crazy - including the mayor - but leads others to think Tepper harbors some hidden wisdom. The tale that emerges is "refreshing and completely likable."

I heard Trillin is a great writer. He isn’t. Had to quit this after 2 hours trying to understand what others see in this boring story and his idiotic parking obsessed character. Like, who cares and it’s not funny or incisive. Find something better to go with your time.

Historia
As New York came to a halt with COVID, Michael Kimmelman composed an email to a group of architects, historians, writers, and friends, inviting them to take a walk. Wherever they liked, he wrote—preferably someplace meaningful to them, someplace that illuminated the city and what they loved about it. At first, the goal was distraction. At a scary moment when everything seemed uncertain, walking around New York served as a reminder of all the ways the city was still a rock, joy, and inspiration.

Excellent Book. Flawed audiobook presentation
Revisado: 01-04-23
I always learn from and appreciate Kimmelman and this audiobook is no exception. In this audiobook the author recruits notable architectural historians and engineers and walks through neighborhoods. It’s a wonderful idea but spoiled a bit by using professional narrators to substitute for the voices of the actual tour experts. I want my Andrew Scott Dolkart in his delightful, exuberant,’occasionally squeaky voice, not some smooth radio-voiced professional!
Take a tip from Malcolm Gladwell whose Talking to Strangers did this right: real people, real interviews in their genuine selves. Like they should be. I would buy this audiobook all over again if you did it right. In this case, a great author, a mediocre publisher.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

The Reservoir follows an unexceptional man in an exceptional time. We see our present-day pandemic world and New York City through the eyes of a former Wall Street veteran, Ridley, as he, in his enforced quarantined solitude, looks back upon his life. He examines his wins, his failures, the gnawing questions - his career, his divorce, his estranged daughter - and questions what it all means and who he really was.

Central Europe's ancient civilizations have long been dominated by empires: The Roman Empire; the Habsburg Empire, based in Austria; and more recently, the Soviet Communists. But the decline of communism in the late twentieth century has unleashed old resentments, rivalries, and ambitions that have caused yet more war in this troubled region.

Like a bad High School History Class
Revisado: 07-16-21
Superficial often incorrect history written like a version out of the US State Department of the 1970s. Ignores what was going on around the world. The voicing of different characters is awful as is the pronunciation. I was surprised at how bad this was. Read Year Zero, A history of 1945 by Ian Baruma to recover from this book
