Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Historia
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another. Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic.

griping world and magic system
Revisado: 04-18-24
The first intro was kind of a slog to get through cuz it was just exposition but after that I was drawn in by how this strange magic system worked and the world the story was placed in. overall as others have said, it was quite enjoyable but not the best thing ever. One of the other reviews I had read before reading this mentioned that all the women were evil and I thought the reviewer was just being dramatic but it was really weird! like there are opportunities for more development with some of the female characters but it is like the author decided nope just evil spawn. I don't know if the author is gonna circle back later that this was something to do with the world but yeah it was strange. I did give this a 4 star review so while it was kinda klunky and weird in some spots I would definitely recommend this. If you self ascribe as a proud feminist then you will likely not like this book....

The story finished but not great
Revisado: 06-22-23
It seemed like there was a lot going on for this short of a book. The pacing felt rushed and the last few chapters of the book it kinda felt like the end battle has to happen but the author was just kinda done. There were definitely some good moments in the book with a perplexing question at the end. Again the story was insanely predictable but decent. The magic system broke down at the end a bit for me as Nara became infinitely powerful but with no real limit.

Historia
Fifteen-year-old Nara Dall has never been good at keeping secrets. Yet it seems that her life has been filled with them, from the ugly scar on her back to the strange powers she possesses. Her mysterious adoptive father refuses to say anything about her origins, and soon, she and her best friend must attend the announcement ceremony, in which youths are tested for a magical gift. A gifted youth has not been announced in the poor village of Dimmitt for decades. When Nara uncovers the reason, she uses her own powers to make things right. The decision sets her and her friend on a path.

It was a little difficult to tell voices apart but with one narrator there is only so much you can do. Story was predictable but good!
