Exactly what I needed!
Revisado: 01-16-25
I assumed the reviews saying “life changing !” Were hyperbolic, so I bought the book because I was curious but also didn’t want to take on ONE MORE “self improvement “ project. This book came into my ears at the exact moment I needed it most. It don’t add stress or work to my plate, it helped me relieve it with such warm and compassion. Can’t say enough positive things about it

Gave up 30 mins in
Revisado: 07-18-24
I cringed every time the author used the term “aspergers” but wanted to keep an open mind, thinking this may have been written when the term was still widely used. NOPE! published in 2020 and the term was no longer in the DSM as of 2013. Author claims she used the latest research for her references but then uses outdated terms and cites sources from over 20 years ago….
Broached the idea of neurodiversity not being a disability but then didn’t discuss the social vs medical model of disability.
The final straw was her argument that the DSM, which is an absolutely an imperfect tool, is not scientifically valid because “it keeps changing” GROSS! THATS HOW ALL SCIENCE WORKS, it changes with research. If you want a dogmatic document that’s supposed to be infallible there are plenty of religious texts you can reference.
Hard pass.

Historia
The Lobotomist explores one of the darkest chapters of American medicine: the desperate attempt to treat the hundreds of thousands of psychiatric patients in need of help during the middle decades of the 20th century. Into this crisis stepped Walter Freeman, MD, who saw a solution in lobotomy, a brain operation intended to reduce the severity of psychotic symptoms. Drawing on Freeman's documents and interviews with Freeman's family, Jack El-Hai takes a penetrating look at the life and work of this complex scientific genius.

Very forgiving portrait
Revisado: 12-01-22
Interesting subject but seems to skate over some of the unsavory stories about his failures, ethical lapses, and hubris. I appreciate a nuanced approach to subjects that can be easily cast as a villain, but this bio is bit forgiving in my opinion. It also focuses narrowly on the man and his patients rather than a holistic view that includes the many practitioners he trained and their thousands of patients whose lives had been inexpertly altered because of the procedure Freeman “pioneered” / mass marketed. Don’t regret reading, but feel the neutral tone implies a tacit approval of the doctor and his methods. I actually do suggest reading, but don’t let it be your only source,

Historia
We humans like to think of ourselves as highly evolved creatures. But if we are supposedly evolution's greatest creation, why do we have such bad knees? Why do we catch head colds so often - 200 times more often than a dog does? How come our wrists have so many useless bones? And are we really supposed to swallow and breathe through the same narrow tube? Surely there's been some kind of mistake. As professor of biology Nathan H. Lents explains in Human Errors, our evolutionary history is nothing if not a litany of mistakes, each more entertaining and enlightening than the last.

Pick up the acclaimed Atlas of Cursed Places, and visit the world's most nerve-wracking locations. With pithy historical profiles, this is a clever gift for the intrepid traveler or armchair adventurer who wants to explore destinations both remarkable and daunting. Visit: a coal town where the ground is constantly on fire; a Zambian national park where more than eight million bats darken the skies; the infamous suicide location of Aokigahara Forest near Mount Fuji; the lesser-known Nevada triangle, in which dozens of aircraft have inexplicably disappeared.

Stupid and fun!
Revisado: 06-09-18
This book reads like an episode of Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack, which is awesome, eye-rolling, and full of tiny jump scares. It’s a pretty brief listen, and totally worth it if you’re into some stupid fun (in a good way).

Historia
A riveting investigation of the myriad ways that parasites control how other creatures - including humans - think, feel, and act. These tiny organisms can live only inside another animal, and, as McAuliffe reveals, they have many evolutionary motives for manipulating their host's behavior. Far more often than appreciated, these puppeteers orchestrate the interplay between predator and prey.

If you are a frequent radio lab listener, this book covers many of the same topics
Revisado: 06-07-18
It’s ok, interesting at points. I’m familiar with a lot of topics covered because there are episodes of Radiolab also covered. There is some additional and more recent info in the book, but not enough to make those topics and more engaging.
The narrator is a bit robotic.
The larger hypothesis of the book is mostly speculative, interesting, but speculative.
Overall, I would consider it a slightly above average popular science non fiction work. Not bad, not great, kind of middle of the road.

Historia
In the late 1890s, Edmund Dene Morel, a young British shipping company agent, noticed something strange about the cargoes of his company's ships as they arrived from and departed for the Congo. Incoming ships were crammed with valuable ivory and rubber. Outbound ships carried little more than soldiers and firearms. Correctly concluding that only slave labor could account for these cargoes, Morel almost singlehandedly made this slave-labor regime the premier human rights story in the world.

Wow, I read a lot of dark history, but my lord, sections of this book were so shocking I felt nauseated. This is an area of history I know little about and am so grateful to have read this book. I now know more than I did and the writing is very good. I highly suggest!

A little dry, but interesting
Revisado: 02-12-15
The writing is a bit dry, but many of the stories are fascinating. Ringdal says he rewrote the first chapter for the English translation, but I still found it a bit confusing and unclear. I'm glad I listened, but doubt I will revisit this audiobook.

Really fun listen, great anecdotes, get to know a little more about modern Russia. Greene's narration is much like his radio performances, it's light and conversational, but sometimes feels a little false. Its a nice light listen.
