Historia
In 1875, tuberculosis was the deadliest disease in the world, accountable for a third of all deaths. A diagnosis of TB - often called consumption - was a death sentence. Then, in a triumph of medical science, a German doctor named Robert Koch deployed an unprecedented scientific rigor to discover the bacteria that caused TB. Koch soon embarked on a remedy - a remedy that would be his undoing. When Koch announced his cure for consumption, Arthur Conan Doyle, then a small-town doctor in England and sometime writer, went to Berlin to cover the event.

Good read for the infectious diseases enthusiast
Revisado: 07-05-15
The story acts as a reminder of how microbes affect our world in the context of the history of two great scientsists--Koch and Pasteur and the great British novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Good fast paced story telling and good narration make it a worthwhile buy for hour car trips.

Historia
In 1943, Albert Schatz, a young Rutgers College Ph.D. student, worked on a wartime project in microbiology professor Selman Waksman’s lab, searching for an antibiotic to fight infections on the front lines and at home. In his eleventh experiment on a common bacterium found in farmyard soil, Schatz discovered streptomycin, the first effective cure for tuberculosis, one of the world’s deadliest diseases.

Heartbreaking story, subpar reading !
Revisado: 02-25-13
Would you listen to Experiment Eleven again? Why?
No. It is a very important story to relate--especially because it highlights the hierarchical nature of science and scientists but I felt really bad for Dr. Schatz.I am glad I read it but it will be too painful going over it again.
What other book might you compare Experiment Eleven to and why?
The demon under the microscope. Story about the discovery of sulfa drugs and the trials of the main protagonist--Gerhard Domagk.
What three words best describe Daniel Goldstein’s performance?
Subpar--he reads the book in a flat monotone.
Any additional comments?
Great story and clear unbiased writing by Peter Pringle.I am glad the facts have come to light.Hopefully, Dr. Schatz will get the recognition he deserves after being cheated out of what was rightfully his by a manipulative and sneaky mentor. A must read for everyone related to science to understand the pitfalls to avoid as well as to get a sense of how we are where we are today with diseases like TB.
