Historia
Leah Roberts was five foot, three inches with short dark hair and a beauty mark above the right side of her lips. Leah’s life took a pretty standard path, starting with a happy childhood in Durham, North Carolina where she lived with her parents and two older siblings, sister Kara and brother Heath, until she began attending college at North Carolina State University in nearby Raleigh. Because of unexpected events and tragedies, Leah would change direction in her early 20’s and begin a journey of self exploration that would take her on an impromptu road trip. You always elevate the bar!
Revisado: 04-17-24
One of your many superpowers is honing in on the silver lining, even when the outcomes are anything but shiny. I’m excited to take a deep dive with you into the Menendez brothers. I’ve always kept a psychological distance with their story. However I feel confident I can stomach it with the both of you. Sending love. xx.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Laura Jennings Breathes Life in Every Character!
Revisado: 03-26-21
I’m a newbie to the Audible family and have been taking shameless advantage of my 30 day Plus trial membership. Thus far I’ve enjoyed listening to several history podcasts, as well as Dr. Frankl’s historic bestseller “Man’s Search for Meaning”. The true test was whether or not I could make it through an entire fiction audiobook without slipping into a boredom-induced semi-coma or hurling my phone across the room.
I’m enrolled currently in a voice acting workshop. I’m also an avid bibliophile who loves reading any and every genre of crime writing. As far as expectations are concerned, I’d set the bar unreasonably high without having ever listened to an audiobook! I’m thrilled to say that my audiobook listening experience was equal parts invigorating, suspenseful, engaging, and pleasurable.
Not only was “Last Girl Gone” a virtual and visceral page-turner in every sense, but Laura Jennings’ narration style was borderline magical. Not once did she over-act or fumble her way through the script. There’s A LOT of dialogue throughout the story. She never allowed the character’s gender or age to stand in the way of what would prove to be a flawless delivery.
Laura’s ability to assume different characters and make subtle adjustments in pitch, speed, drawl, and dialect inspire me to work that much harder on my craft. It’s no secret that the voice acting industry remains predominantly male, in both talent and writing. Laura uses her voice fiercely and skillfully and by doing so is blazing trails for women breaking into the competitive voice world of audiobooks, video games, commercials, podcasts, and promos.
I look forward to reading more of J.G. Hetherton’s fiction. If I’m not mistaken, there’s a sequel!
Two minutes later...
There sure is!! “What Lies Beneath: A Laura Chambers Mystery”. Can’t wait 🤓.

On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you'll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder.

Absolutely Smitten!
Revisado: 03-21-21
I agree with Mathew Henry’s assertion to respectfully disregard the prior complaint about the background piano music...I found it atmospheric in the most unobtrusive way.
Stephen Fry’s storytelling prowess is quite legendary! An added bonus is the regular appearance of guest experts who add richness and flavor to each episode. Victorian Secrets shines an humorous, sometimes shocking, cross cultural spotlight on the people, places, and stories unique to the Victorian era whose existence have been denied historically in mainstream media and academia. I appreciate the inclusion of primary historical resources like personal diaries. I also love that the performances given by the voice actresses and actors never feel forced and caricature-like.
You will laugh, wince, cry, and contemplate throughout. You will be compelled to perform multiple Google searches to further enrich your self-education of Victorian his and her-story. While this podcast may not feel appropriate for children under the age of 12, I feel caregivers are ultimately responsible for deciding their child’s maturity and comfort level with subjects like sexual identity, death, mental illness, human anatomy, mythology, pornography, and political scandal. Used as a learning tool and with responsible adult “supervision”, each episode holds the power to catalyze important conversations between adult caregiver and child about class, sex, race, discrimination, diversity, disease, innovation, abuse, empowerment, and disenfranchisement.
I look forward to learning more about the Victorian era as well as listening to more of Stephen Fry’s creative content. Cheers and thanks for reading!
