Historia
Clayton Stumper might be in his twenties, but he dresses like your grandpa and fusses like your aunt. Abandoned at birth on the steps of the Fellowship of Puzzlemakers, he was raised by a group of eccentric enigmatologists and now finds himself among the last survivors of a fading institution. When the esteemed crossword compiler and main maternal presence in Clayton’s life, Pippa Allsbrook, passes away, she bestows her final puzzle on him: a promise to reveal the mystery of his parentage and prepare him for life beyond the walls of the commune.

Meh
Revisado: 02-03-25
Slow and boring. Clayton had no personality and did not seem to have any purpose in life. A few interesting characters made the story more appealing.
Did not care for the narrators.
I wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t get there. 😞

Great start, tedious end
Revisado: 01-26-25
This book started out with so much promise. It was written with such sensitivity and detail during the drama of the earthquake, I was enraptured. Within part 2, the story became tedious. Elena’s ongoing untreated PTSD and ‘martyr’ complex was exhausting. Hearing her same guilt, sadness, etc again and again and again, then her loss of backbone when confronting her husband—ugh. I couldn’t wait for this book to end.

Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Dark and disturbing
Revisado: 12-15-24
Not my kind of story. I enjoy suspense, but I’m not a fan of noir fiction/psychological thrillers that include multiple sociopaths.
It was well written with excellent narration, however the darkness and ‘survival’ narrative was suboptimal for my tastes.
I’m glad it was a free title, otherwise I’d be quite disappointed.

One of the best books I’ve ever heard
Revisado: 11-24-24
While I often became frustrated with the FMC’s personal challenges, this book was remarkable in its ability to elicit emotion.
I don’t often have emotional responses to books or immerse myself in novels very often—this one drew me in and wouldn’t let go. I loved it and am starting it over during the holiday weekend so I can have uninterrupted listening time.
I cannot wait for this author to publish another book. 🩷

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Cute story
Revisado: 08-08-24
It was a pleasant HEA story. The story wasn’t as entertaining as her other books, though I enjoyed the mystery of this one.
The stilted narration by John Cho decreased my enjoyment of the story. John read his lines, he didn’t perform a character. Every chapter he narrated abruptly reminded me I was listening to a book, not experiencing events. It was such a bummer to be immersed in Phillipa Soo’s (always) terrific performance, only to be jolted back to reality by the delivery of John’s next flat, halting sentence.
At least it was free. 🤷🏻♀️

Too much sex
Revisado: 06-22-24
I was excited about this book since I haven’t had any novels that included birding, but this one is more sex, less birding.
I like a little spice…in moderation. Usually I’ll fast forward through a sex scene if I don’t want to listen to it. Sadly I found myself fast forwarding through entire chapters, which is really disappointing.
I’m not sure I’ll finish the book (with only 2 hours left).
This review is for others folks who don’t want to deal with this much spice.
Audible has made it a huge hassle to return a book, and they’ve done an abysmal job of properly content labeling/tagging their audiobooks.

Exhausting
Revisado: 05-02-24
This story was so frustrating and tiresome. The main character had zero backbone and was filled with insecurity, secrets, and an unnatural codependency with her brother. She was to marry a man she didn’t love, wasn’t honest with, and was using for his money.
It was gross.
I only continued listening so I could hear about all the other characters that brought color and life to this depressing, abysmal tale.
This book has turned me off the author for a while.

Sweet and boring
Revisado: 01-23-24
A sweet feel-good story, but it lacked depth. I wasn’t able to sink into the book or connect with the characters. Everything was too pristine, including the antagonist who wasn’t as cut-throat as eluded to in the book summary.
All in all, meh. 🤷🏻♀️

Historia
In the back room at an elite gallery party, 40-something soccer mom Johanna Porter stands face to face with her younger self. The girl in the portrait, La Rosa Blanca, is fierce and fearless, and Johanna sees the great painter she almost was before her lover, the powerful artist Nestor Pinedo, torched her career. When she cuts the million-dollar masterpiece out of its frame, rolls it up and walks out, it’s not a theft. It’s a rescue.

Angsty—an audible anxiety attack
Revisado: 01-19-24
I really wanted to like this book and tried everything in hopes I would, but ten chapters in, I’m calling it. There is too much ragey snark, self-hate, and general douchery for my taste, though that may be due to my dislike of the narrator. She does a great job—I’m just not fond of her work.
Combine the dark comedic writing with a narrator that oozes sarcasm and angst, and it’s a perfect storm of NOPE from me.
I was looking forward to listening to her other book (Principles of (E)motion), but it’s the same narrator and I’m concerned her overly dramatic tone will ruin it.
I may need to try reading these rather than listening.
