Old New York City in the gangster era.
Revisado: 02-04-22
Story was well read and interesting. The North River is another name for the Hudson, used about 100 years ago. Nice story resolution. A lot of profanity but I suppose the author thought it proper for the time.

Historia
The rise of Chicago’s gangland can be attributed to a number of factors. First, there was the sudden explosion in its population, which saw an influx of immigrants - mainly from eastern and southern Europe, as well as Americans from neighboring and faraway states - teem into the city in search of promising job opportunities and a better life. The abrupt inundation of permanent citizens rendered the already suffering policeman to civilian ratio out of kilter, and the authorities' control of the city became further unzipped.

Story could have been a lot better.
Revisado: 02-04-22
Lots of cliche's, corny analogies and attempts at "cool" language, all poorly done. Narrator was fast, factual and a bit nasal. Story comes across as over edited. Could have been a great read if facts were expanded on, so you don't seem to be skipping from story to story. It felt like a 33rmp record being played at 78rpm. Overall, book was full of facts and information but just too fast and choppy for me.

Revisado: 02-04-22
Scarpetta goes back to where she started. Same narrator, same characters. Well written, as always. Sometimes going home is not as wonderful as we think it will be.....

Historia
This is a story from the Fall of the House of Usher collection. The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares: Premature burial, ghostly transformation, words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Poe done well
Revisado: 06-11-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Fall of the House of Usher to be better than the print version?
I have never read the print version.
What did you like best about this story?
Considering the script, the reading was very good
What about William Roberts’s performance did you like?
Good reading, perfect emotion, not flat, not overdone.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I think it's been done.
Any additional comments?
It's hard to make Poe enjoyable, but this was a good job.

Hard to follow
Revisado: 06-11-17
Would you try another book from Colson Whitehead and/or Bahni Turpin?
The reader was fine but not fantastic. Story line jumped around so much, it was often hard to follow.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Not really unexpected, just sort of blunt.
What about Bahni Turpin’s performance did you like?
Not flat, but not fantastic either.
Could you see The Underground Railroad (Oprah's Book Club) being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No idea
Any additional comments?
Overall, a good read.

Historia
Shots rang out in Savannah's grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. John Berendt's sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative flows like a thoroughly engrossing novel, and yet it is a work of nonfiction.

Excellent story read by an excellent reader!
Revisado: 02-19-17
Where does Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book is historical fiction and the author interviewed all the characters mentioned in the book. The characters are what make the story interesting, not just the story line. The Narrator does an excellent job creating voices for each character so the characters have a personality beside what the author gives them. I have read this book a number of times and glean something new each time.
What does Jeff Woodman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His character voices add to the personalities given by the author. I have not seen the movie, so the personalities I visualize are given to me by listening.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could I probably would.
