Historia
On May 8, 1977, at Barton Hall, on the Cornell University campus, in front of 8,500 eager fans, the Grateful Dead played a show so significant that the Library of Congress inducted it into the National Recording Registry. The band had just released Terrapin Station and was still finding its feet after an extended hiatus. In 1977, the Grateful Dead reached a musical peak, and their East Coast spring tour featured an exceptional string of performances. Many Deadheads claim that the quality of the live recording of the show made by Betty Cantor-Jackson elevated its importance.

Great curated tour.

One reason I love art museums is that I enjoy the context that went into the art almost as much as the art itself. That’s true with this book too. I was never a super deadhead. I saw maybe a dozen shows in the 80s and 90s. I don’t really listen much to the Dead today. But I love the history of the art, the context around which it was made. I’m a voracious consumer of rock ‘n’ roll memoirs. This book hits on all those aspects that I love.

Historia
MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan isn’t one to avoid arguments. He relishes them as the lifeblood of democracy and the only surefire way to establish the truth. Arguments help us solve problems, uncover new ideas we might not have considered, and nudge our disagreements toward mutual understanding. A good argument, made in good faith, has intrinsic value—and can also simply be fun.

Not just arguing, great book on public speaking
Revisado: 08-20-23
If you ever do public speaking, this is a great book to have in your reference library. The book’s title says “argument,” but the content is much more about public speaking generally. Hassan’s point I suppose, is what’s the point of doing a public talk if you’re not trying to convince someone of something.
The frameworks and examples are nothing surprising or new, but the structure is excellent and delivery very effective. Great read.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Surprising page-turner
Revisado: 05-16-23
Sometimes in historical biographies as detailed as this one you get bogged down and it moves slowly. Maybe this is a testament to all the NB packed into those 50 years, but i was always eager to hear what came next.

Historia
The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture.

Challenging and practical
Revisado: 11-18-20
At first Barrett’s work doesn’t seem that counter intuitive. But over time she builds her case so effectively and thoroughly that it is hard not to be a convert anxious to discard many popular works of the last 40 years. Great stuff

The book spends a lot of time on basic investing, diversification and history things like the tulip bubble. I suppose that’s fine for establishing the cred of the authors but isn’t really anything new to a typical tech investor.
Also- is it pronounced “dohje” or “dog-e” (doggy). Pronouncing doge so literally always seemed odd to me. Fwiw.

Super fun synopsis of Great Courses history set
Revisado: 04-16-15
If you're like me and listen to course after course, this is a fun one for the comparative aspect. Some of these I'd heard previously in their full lecture, others helped me find lectures I wanted to dive into in more depth.
