Good setup but abrupt and unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 02-25-22
This had a really good setup and good character development but the storyline just sort of went off the tracks at some point into a very predictable outcome. Then it all just ended pretty abruptly with lots of loose ends to be tied up. Very unsatisfying Enjoyed the narration however.

Porn for overbearing moms
Revisado: 08-25-21
Great little beach read. Trashy fun. Basically 2 equally terrible women getting back at each other over a man. That man is a son for one and a romantic conquest for the other. Feels like women over 50 (especially moms with sons who have ever disliked a girlfriend) would be especially into this as the mom character is portrayed in a more favorable light than the girlfriend even though she’s awful. Granted, except for one thing the girlfriend did that actually tipped her over into the unforgivable evil category, they are equally as despicable.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo meets First Wives Club
Revisado: 07-09-21
I wasn’t sure what to expect. All I know is I love this author and British narrators. The story was much more about corporate espionage than anything. But being a female listener, loved revenge angle. Would highly recommend. Also, as a bonus, very sexual in a surprising and delightful way. Hope there’s a sequel.

Historia
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Decent but too predictable
Revisado: 11-14-20
This had all the elements of books are usually like… British narration, murder mystery, whodunit, interesting setting...but it was just too predictable. I think the author over hinted too many times and the pieces were too easy to put together early on. Still, enjoyed listening to it and it was decent. “One by One” by Ruth Ware was similar but much better in my opinion.

Scientifically inaccurate (spoilers!)
Revisado: 02-02-20
***Spoiler alert***
Okay, this book has the big ah-ha breakthrough moment of whodunnit and why based on a scientific inaccuracy surrounding genetics and heritability. It states two brown eyed people cannot have a blue eyed child—which is 100% false! This fact is used to uncover a love child of infidelity who is the rightful heir, bla bla...so the entire storyline makes no sense. I lost respect for the author after that.
This is the second book in the series I’ve listened to and am quitting. Mostly because I just don’t connect with the main character at all, plus the books are just a little joyless overall. I’m never excited to listen to them and finishing them is a bit of a chore.

Main character just not likable
Revisado: 12-31-19
This is the second book in the series I listened to and I’m stopping here. The storyline is fine but I had a hard time caring because the main character is just so unlikable. He’s basically a historical fiction version of a modern useless trust fund kid with no redeeming qualities. I thought he might get better in this second book (I’m all for redemption of an unlikable character!) but I was disappointed. Also, the narrator is good except the voices he uses for certain women. Very shrill on the ear and hard to listen too, cartoonish. Pass.

Historia
When 18-year-old Chloe Emery returns to her West London home she finds her mother missing, the house covered in blood. Everything points to murder, except for one thing: there’s no sign of the body. London detective Maeve Kerrigan and the homicide team turn their attention to the neighbours. The ultra-religious Norrises are acting suspiciously; their teenage daughter and Chloe Emery definitely have something to hide. Then there’s William Turner, once accused of stabbing a schoolmate and the neighborhood’s favorite criminal. Is he merely a scapegoat?

Meh. Think I’m done with this series.
Revisado: 10-03-18
I love a good crime series, especially with British narration, so I stuck with this one for a while but after this book, think I’m quitting. It started out in book 1 well but nothing really took off from there. With this installment, everything was too formulaic and there wasn’t a ton of character development for me. It just got to the point where I didn’t care whether the main characters succeeded or failed...a sure sign in any story it’s time to quit.
The narration was good/fine except for the vocalization of her male partner, the tone of which I found grating.
I enjoyed the whole series alright on the whole! Just not a top recommendation for me.

Save a credit! Christian propaganda-not a novel
Revisado: 11-12-12
I should have listened to the bad reviews, Oh, why didn't I listen!?
Narrator--pretty awful. Female characters especially bad, almost funny. Like when a teenage boy dresses up as a girl and does "that voice".
Characters--flat. Very generic. From a Lifetime movie.
Premise--interesting. That is why I bought it. But it is so poorly researched on the scientific end that his goal (to make me see the light) actually backfired because of how unfairly matched the arguments were. I am all for keeping an open mind and having it changed but not by a zealot with nothing more than his own faith. And NOT during what was supposed to be a novel. This was a Christain infomercial.
Writing--oh, Jesus. It is bad.
Story--here is where is gets interesting. The book starts off okay with an interesting event--tons of people disappearing--but quickly devolves. In the end, it is a very thinly veiled attempt at Christian propaganda where the author must have thought he was writing to adults with the intellectual capacity of children. Some of the writing is like a wizened prophet speaking to idiot sinners (that is you and me, by the way). It is almost insulting but I know he believes in his message and was probably just not given the gift of the written word so that is fine. I know he meant no intentional offense. That being said, there are so many points where I started laughing because of how obvious it was that he was trying to make us "see the light". Once it is clear what he is up to, the rest of the story is about the characters' journey at coming around to the truth of Jesus and the story and side plot (which was the only kind of interesting thing going on) become secondary.
If you are already a True Believer, go on and get this book. It will make you feel all fuzzy and warm that you will be saved, too. If you are not, this book was just plain laughably bad.
