Light fluffy fun noir

Noir with a touch of slapstick & sexiness. Good for a smile and a wink but be ready to suspend disbelief.

Very good pulp fiction
Revisado: 08-28-24
Maybury write very entertaining horror and adventure stories. The narratives are plot driven with good character development and a patina of grit and blood.
The stories can be a bit “Hollywood “ for me with some very predictable resolutions and saccharine emotional moments.
All in all, fun listens with great narration.

Historia
The world renowned author of The Satanic Verses and The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Salman Rushdie is a Whitbread Award winner and recipient of the Booker Prize. His first truly American novel, Fury is a metaphorically rich black comedy that reflects the pressure-cooker of modern life. Malik Solanka, irascible doll-maker and retired historian of ideas, suffers the pain of wanting without knowing exactly what it is he wants.

Language and ideas
Revisado: 08-23-24
I always learn about art from Rushdie.
Taking the ordinary world and creating a magical fairytale of our obsessive replaying of past trauma. I see myself too often for comfort.
That being said the ending was a bit flat. Though left me longing for that one who got away.

Historia
Booker Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie combines a ferociously witty family saga with a surreally imagined and sometimes blasphemous chronicle of modern India and flavors the mixture with peppery soliloquies on art, ethnicity, religious fanaticism, and the terrifying power of love. Moraes "Moor" Zogoiby, the last surviving scion of a dynasty of Cochinese spice merchants and crime lords, is also a compulsive storyteller and an exile.

As a painter and lover of art and storytelling there is so much in this rich text to enjoy. The performance was also very good. I’m sure I’ll listen to it again sometime as I do most of Rushdie’s works .

Historia
Serving as a powerful follow-up to Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life, Dr. Gad Saad unpacks what is really happening in progressive safe zones, why we need to be paying more attention to these trends, and what we must do to stop the spread of dangerous thinking. A professor at Concordia University who has witnessed this troubling epidemic firsthand, Dr. Saad dissects a multitude of these concerning forces (corrupt thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, etc.) that have given rise to a stifling political correctness in our society.

Excellent writing, idiotic conclusions.
Revisado: 07-22-21
Trumpism a bastion of science and truth?
Mr Saad is obviously a very intelligent individual but allows his anger and cultural bias to poison what are some very astute observations.
The consistent hypocrisy in his critique of identity politics while his own identity and story are repeatedly retold is humorous. He rails against cancel culture while canceling anyone who disagrees with him with made up medical conditions.
A must read for liberals everywhere as a critique and to understand the thin gruel that nurtures right wing thought.

Historia
Over the years investigator Joe Gunther has battled drug pushers and corporate swindlers, grappled with environmental conspirators, and foiled gangs and home invaders. But while usually successful, Gunther hasn't always come out on top. Thirty years earlier, store owner Klaus Oberfeldt was robbed and beaten senseless. Gunther, distracted by his wife's losing struggle with cancer in the same hospital where Klaus was slipping from life, did something that would plague him for the rest of his career: He let the case go cold, burying it in the past along with his private sorrows.

Real, character driven and understated
Revisado: 06-08-21
Mayor’s books have been one of the best surprise finds in the catalog of newly included titles for members. They are pulp fiction with genuine insight into relationship, human fallibility and the oddness of circumstance. There is action and plot but without becoming to much like a comic book. Very enjoyable!
