Historia
Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

Peter Swanson is one of the best writers.
Revisado: 06-17-24
He just makes mystery writing seem so natural and effortless. It reminds me of the best years of SVU writing when you didn’t think anything special would happen and then it was all bat crazy in the middle and just when you’d think it couldn’t get any crazier, it did. Very satisfying. Really created a good simple psychopath in this story.

Absolutely terrifying from start to finish. Lisa Jewell is a master. Every detail, every word, was so artfully placed to create suspense. Loved this one.

Michael Robotham is the best!
Revisado: 02-16-23
Been waiting for valentines day just for this release. I read a couple mystery novels a week and Robotham is in my top three favorites. This series is so satisfying. Joe Jameson, the narrator does all the voices so well I forget his gender half the time. Totally great story, characters and narration.

Historia
In this first novel, we are introduced to suave, handsome Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal, but he grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

Patricia Highsmith is just so good at the turn from dark but normal human impulses to evil and psychosis. I'm off to watch the excellent movie of this, and then... another Highsmith novel.

I loved this author's other books but not this one
Revisado: 01-18-23
Was so looking forward to this after the masterpiece of Reckless Girls. I guess everyone is allowed a few stinkers. Still a brilliant author.
The characters were so rambly and heady and nothing likeable or especially unlikeable about any of them. No real villains. Just sad sacks.

Those Unfathomable Females
Revisado: 10-20-19
I really enjoyed the latest two Michael Robotham books, but this one had me throwing things at the computer. The characters seemed really shallow and every time Joe would encounter a female character he'd describe her first and foremost based on her current, future, or past sexiness. Even his daughters! They had grown into their beauty or would soon grow into their beauty. It was creepy. His way of comforting a family friend who he'd JUST talked out of suicide was to basically tell her how desirable she was and then she THANKED HIM. It made no sense. He's supposed to be a psychologist?? His relationship with the young hot cop was even more non-sensical. Plot, meh. Characters, meh meh. The only bright spot was RUIZ. A likeable boiled-sweet sucking character who's always saving the day.

Drink when you hear the word "fist"
Revisado: 07-28-19
I have never read a book that uses the word "fist" or "fists" so many times. Perhaps a book about boxing might.
I was really looking forward to this book but sad to say it was not for me. Overly descriptive language and a bland narrator sucked the life out of the decent bones of this story.
