Historia
New witch Emma Hart is at her wit's end and, this time, it's not the result of her vampire ghost roommate, her snarky owl, or her feelings for a certain fallen angel. Key members of Spellbound society are acting like children and it's wreaking havoc on the town's regulation-happy infrastructure. When Emma is turned invisible during the investigation, she realizes that the spell was no accident and that someone is out to silence her - permanently.

Lacks depth
Revisado: 11-23-24
The author seems to pull from recognizable current stories and movies, but lacks the continuity to pull it all together. it's almost as if her imagination is not up to the task of creating her own scenarios. The premise is compelling and could be a good read if she put more thought into her characters and gave them more depth. The narrator lacks the ability to create recognizable differences in the characters and specifically misses the opportunity to incorporate a Scottish brogue for the ghost character.

Historia
The only magic Emma Hart believes in is caffeine and the power of the dryer to lose one sock per load. A chance encounter lands her in Spellbound, a town where supernaturals have been cursed to remain for centuries - probably not the best time for Emma to discover that she's actually a witch. Between the recent murder of the town's public defender, a goblin accused of theft, remedial witch classes, and the attention of one smoking hot vampire, Emma struggles to navigate this unfamiliar terrain without losing her mind...or her life.

Could be a good series
Revisado: 10-30-24
I expected this to be a very well thought out fantasy fiction mystery series. i think it has the potential to be a good series, if the author would fully think out the characters and the background stories. she seems to throw in beings and plots without any basis or history for them, and it seems more like a patchwork quilt than a new community of beings. the story bounces around and lacks cohesiveness. The performance is lackluster as well, inasmuch as the reader misses on some keys in the story. For example, one main character should be read with an accent based on the words written for them. and isn't, i think the biggest character flaw in the story is that the main character is a mid twenty's woman with a law degree and real life experiences. However, many of the situations she was written into are more for a teenager who has not yet experienced life.

Wonderfully escapist
Revisado: 09-25-24
I love the inclusion of the "dream segments" which add another layer to the narrative. i appreciate the chapter heading quotes. However, the number of chapters is too numerous and, with these quotes, detracts from the enjoyment of the audio version of the book.

I love the relationships the author has built into the storyline. There are so many varied personalities and that, along with the storylines provided by the ghost, make it a very entertaining read.

The New York Times best-selling author of Magpie Murders and Moriarty brilliantly reinvents the classic crime novel once again with this clever and inventive mystery starring a fictional version of the author himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes, investigating a case involving buried secrets, murder, and a trail of bloody clues.

Inclusion of nonfiction distracting
Revisado: 08-30-24
Although I appreciated the story as a whole and was engaged in the detective story portion of it, I found the inclusion of the non fiction segments distracting. I feel it focused too much on the author's life to the detriment of the character development.

Frances and her husband, George, have two points of interest in Paris. One is an impromptu holiday to visit the Paris Exposition. The other is personal. George’s Aunt Julia has requested her nephew’s help in looking into the suspicious death of renowned artist Paul Ducasse. Though Julia is not entirely forthcoming about her reasons, she is clearly a woman mourning a lost love. At the exposition, swarming with tourists, tragedy casts a pall on the festivities. A footbridge collapses. Julia is among the casualties. However, she was not just another fateful victim.

An engaging plotline
Revisado: 08-12-24
I love the backdrop of the Paris world fair. I found the story engaging and entertaining. The only detractor for me was the narrator's inhalation of breath after every sentence. I found it fairly distracting, otherwise overall, very well done.

Historia
Inspector Treadles, Charlotte Holmes’ friend and collaborator, has been found locked in a room with two dead men, both of whom worked with his wife at the great manufacturing enterprise she has recently inherited. Rumors fly. Had Inspector Treadles killed the men because they had opposed his wife’s initiatives at every turn? Had he killed in a fit of jealous rage because he suspected Mrs. Treadles of harboring deeper feelings for one of the men? To make matters worse, he refuses to speak on his own behalf, despite the overwhelming evidence against him.

Historia
Successful businessman Jeremy Marks wasn't highly regarded by any of the members of the West London Archery Club. Most of them considered him a buffoon and a bore. But everyone was stunned when the fellow was murdered during a lull in the club's annual archery competition. He'd been shot with arrows from a longbow during a raging thunderstorm. But those who knew Marks well understood that the unkempt "court jester" persona adopted by the late, unlamented man was as fake as the smile he wore.

But Harriet discovers that the best intentions can lead to murder when she is strangled inside her mansion with a house full of holiday guests. As much as Inspector Witherspoon enjoys his job delivering justice, the last thing he wanted was a complicated murder case just a week before Christmas. He soon discovers that Harriet's own husband and grown stepchildren are not overcome with grief and neither are most of her friends.

Comfortable Read
Revisado: 12-03-23
I love the simplicity of the story and the continuity from book to book of the character development.. I do believe, however, that it is unnecessary to continually reiterate the team's quest for Justice.
There could be more plot development, instead. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
