Zuckerberg’s sociopathy & the author’s own filter bubble.
Revisado: 11-13-24
I was really impressed with the author’s narration, he did an amazing job.
His clear and concise revelation about the culture behind the internet monopolies and the monopolistic behavior that justifies the label was illuminating. It actually morivates me to listen to some of the other works he recommended, especially as I am a step-father who inherited a step-son who suffers from screen addiction and exhibits the symptoms that he references.
His clear cultural bias was also very interesting to see. As a Conservative myself, I was not surprised by the results of the 2016 election. I saw the groundswell of grassroots support for Donald Trump from the inside, and the only surprise I felt was at how close it was. I did not believe the Polls that were being published that favored Hillary Clinton, believing they were inaccurate and did not adequately account for the quiet Conservative base that exists in America that had been waiting for a Conservative hero who would champion our beliefs the way that President Trump clearly has and that was very clearly demonstrated in the recent 2024 election. I have to wonder if Mr. McNamee still believes in the Russia Hoax. For my part, I believed in everything that Donald Trump espoused BEFORE he ran for office, and I initially did not support him and his blowhard behavior. However, he won me over as he continually revealed belief after belief that I had espoused for the better part of two decades before his campaign.
I hope that Roger McNamee eventually will realize that President Trump is HIS hero, too.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Laughter and tears
Revisado: 11-12-24
My family came out of Appalachia as well, but probably much earlier than J.D.’s. My sister traced our ancestry to the Hatfield & McCoy’s, too. (I don’t remember which it was.) My family ended up in Oklahoma and Nebraska on my father’s and mother’s sides respectively. My mother’s side of the family wasn’t too far away from those Appalachian roots, though. A LOT of bad history that my family is still dealing with. Hearing J.D.’s story was both hard and cathartic. Thank you, sir.

The Leftist bias and GLARING scientific inaccuracies.
Revisado: 04-13-24
This is the last book I will listen to written by Dennis Taylor, and possibly narrated by Ray Porter as well. I’m not a fan of the whining Ray Porter puts into his narration. I don’t know if it’s only books he narrates by Taylor; if it is, then I apologize to Mr. Porter. As for Dennis Taylor, good grief. His science is pure crap, and his bias in favor of Leftist organizations like CNN and against Conservative values is blatant. I don’t need to be preached at by an obvious unthinking person. Taylor, you should have stuck to pure science fiction like your Bobiverse series SMH.

The pathos, the funny and the sad parts.
Revisado: 12-31-23
I don’t like the main character’ssocialist ideology, but I do like how he’s confronted by how unrealistic it is. That ideology is the only reason why this book and all the others in the series lose one star, it feels too much like preaching.

On Ludus, life is often cheap. Nora's childhood hadn't given her many options. With nowhere else to go after losing her family, she joined an old friend in a street gang and found an unlikely home there. But unfortunately, tragedy is about to befall Nora. Grudges from the distant past and movements of shadowy organizations may take away everything she is familiar with and all that she holds dear...possibly even her life. Danger has never stopped her before, but survival may require escaping her old life and embarking on an insane, desperate journey.

Revisado: 06-25-23
Was this even written by the same person??
This character is completely different from the character described in the series. I don’t know if it was the narrator or the story, or a combination of both, but it just turned me right off. I was looking forward to hearing how she developed into the person in the series, but this was ridiculous. Very disappointing. The series was awesome.

The Current Hostility Towards Cops Explained
Revisado: 06-11-22
This douche-canoe discredits himself after his first few chapters of self-aggrandizement. I kept waiting for him to start doing some teaching, but he never did, and then he tried to break all people from everywhere in the world into 3 separate groups, and then he began to spout hostility towards the 3rd group, those he considers “wimps”.
I myself am a “nice” person… and a “difficult” person… and a “wimp”…
No wonder police today are under attack if this asshat has been teaching them how to interact with the public. Most people have qualities that cause them to fall into all 3 of this numbtard’s categories, like me, and which of those qualities they display usually depends on their situation and how they are feeling at the time.
But of this guy was teaching cops to identify “wimps” and infecting them with his hostility, then it’s no wonder cops are considered scary and there’s a strong backlash against their culture nowadays, because most people will be identified as “wimps” by them.
From the blurb on the cover of this book, I was under the impression that it was going to teach me how to handle the gas-lighting and other manipulative behaviors of narcissists, but it sounds like this book was written by one! Good grief.

Humanity has colonized over 500 planets under the not-always-benevolent administration of the Federation of Planetary States via the FED Army and Navy. Longstanding grievances over economic exploitation by Earth-based companies have grown into a full-scale rebellion, and attempted secession has been tried by many of the more successful colonies. The Rebels believe a peaceful separation is possible. The FEDs believe an easy and swift military resolution is available.

Now I feel like I need a Space Viking refresher!
Revisado: 06-17-21
This is a great piece of fan fiction that fleshes out the truly awesome universe created by H. Beam Piper, and sets up the early founding of the Sword Worlds. When I heard the words “contragravity” and “spherical spaceships” I was, like, WAITAMINUTE WHATTHEHELL ! ! ! And I just kept hearing more and more HBP-isms.
LOL
Love it. Mr. Wehr does an excellent job of telling his story in almost exactly the same style as Piper, too. Jeffrey Kafer, whom I’ve never listened to before, did sn excellent job, although his female voices were non-existent. However, I still hope he does Space Viking, it’s mostly dudes talking anyway.
I am probably going to buy the third book of this series.

I don’t know why these stories were made into a television series, it just seems like humdrum sword-and-sandle. Hopefully the on-screen version will be more interesting when I eventually watch it.

Psuedoscience and goofy battle tactics
Revisado: 06-03-21
Although this is an interesting series, I find the science to be more magical than realistic even though it tries to seem like hard science, and I lost my patience with the battle tactics after the second time the guy with the artificial legs tried to take out a charging alpha with his M4 set on single-shot instead of blowing it away on full-auto. I don’t care how big and tough an alpha gets, if it gets ventilated by a full 30-round magazine of .556mm within the space of about 2 seconds, it’s not going to get back up, even as dinky as .556 is! Kind of stupid, and someone like that guy shiould not have made that kind of mistake twice or neglected to kick his own ass repeatedly for making it the first time. I quit listening halfway through this compilation, which means I quit at about the middle of book 5, which should tell you this is a pretty good series, but I’m glad I didn’t buy the rest of the series. It likes to act like it’s all up on military tactics and hardware and bioscience stuff, but for a hard science fiction stickler like me, it just rang false after a while.

No one deserves a "happily ever after" quite as much as the second oldest Winston brother and his lady love Claire McClure (a.k.a. Scarlet St. Claire). Cruelty and circumstance tore them apart, almost 20 years ago. Secrecy and bitterness kept them separated. But do you know who's tired of their separation and stubbornness? Everyone. Especially Billy Winston’s family. And now, they're going to do something about it.
