Historia
You want your man to be strong, competent, and devoted to giving you what you need to feel happy, secure, and loved. Yet if you are like most women, you are doing things that ensure your man never steps up in the way you want. You may be enabling and even encouraging him to remain passive, self-interested, irresponsible, and undevoted. Many of your innocent, and even loving behaviors and words are pushing your man away and preventing him from being the man you need him to be. This book will put an end to that forever.

Book falls apart the further you go
Revisado: 01-31-24
I was looking for a new point of view, but the book falls apart in that, in all of his examples, he was right and his wife was wrong. Two chapters were tautological where “a woman should not enforce her boundaries unless she needs to enforce her boundaries, but she should do so in a way that’s not too masculine about enforcing her boundaries, as that would kill the man’s devotion towards her.” And, “A women has every right to autonomy and not do something her man directs her toward, but this will kill his devotion towards her.” Based on the advice in this book, I think I’m okay with “killing” the devotion a man will supposedly have for me if he is someone who treats me poorly and then blames me or my energy in the process. This felt like bad advice that shames the user when the advice got it wrong.
I would really have liked a money example from the data. While there were some money hypotheticals, like the Tinder Swindler, again in every example Roedde used from his own life, he was always right. And if a woman submits her money to a man who is irresponsible with funds, Roedde proposed that the woman failed because she did not believe in her worth to find a better man, did not express her feelings well enough to get him to respect her wishes (but she can’t express her feelings to get a specific outcome like not spending her money! As that would be, per this book, manipulation!). **deep sigh**
I would not be comfortable sharing a bank account with a man who believes in polarity the way Zak Roedde does. I felt more confused after listening to the book than when I started. A man’s devotion under this book comes at a high price.
PS- using the word “vulnerably” after every sentence where you tell a woman to express her feelings doesn’t mean Roedde is using the “term vulnerably “ right. It literally means “exposed to potential attack or harm.” Which Roedde’s advice appears to have a high probability of leading a woman into harm’s way.

From "one of the funniest writers in America" comes a collection of stories culled from the front lines of the millennial culture wars. Rife with failing rock bands, student loans, and participation trophies,
Spoiled Brats is about a generation of narcissists - and the well-meaning boomers who made them that way.

Simon Rich being Simon Rich
Revisado: 05-29-21
I started watching Simon Rich shows before I knew who Simon Rich was (Man Seeking Woman... and then Miracle Workers when I saw that the two shows were both written by Rich). Since then, Simon Rich has been in my audible queue, and I am so glad I finally purchased "Spoiled Brats." I found this collection of short stories entertaining, revealing and compassionate. I hope you also enjoy Simon Rich's writing for the funny, thoughtful Simon Rich perspective that I have enjoyed for so long.

a lovely read, multiple stories

I was not expecting to like this aa much as I did. Great demonstration of changes to the treatment of women as Maslow's hierarchy of needs evolved. Reminds me of Nehesi-Coates' "The Water Dancer" for reasons that become apparent in Veronica's story.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Narrator of Part 3 Take with a Grain of Salt
Revisado: 10-12-19
Professors of parts 1 & 2 are amazing; professor 3 is a bit sexist and apologist for racism. For 2 examples, he tries to make it sound like segregation laws worked both ways, and he laughs that women in the 1960s were the only group that needed "consciousness ridings" to learn they were oppressed. No, they knew Prof. They just never had a place to talk about it.

The Upcycle is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Cradle to Cradle, the most consequential ecological manifesto of our time. Now, drawing on the lessons gained from 10 years of putting the cradle-to-cradle concept into practice with businesses, governments, and ordinary people, William McDonough and Michael Braungart envision the next step in the solution to our ecological crisis: We don't just reuse resources with greater effectiveness, we actually improve them as we use them.

Probably a good reference book, not great audio.
Revisado: 03-29-18
Probably a good reference book, not a great audio book. For a book about design, the writing (and so the story) is not clearly structured. It consists of stories of the author's many projects, the author's past books, and the author's non profits. my key takeaways from the book were that even when humans try to do good, they could still do better, but do not ask me where to start, because that got lost in the shuffle with this book.

mixed bag
Revisado: 01-10-18
This book was Co-authored by an attorney and a doctor. The chapters by the doctor are very informative. The chapters by the attorney go on long tangents about skiing and cycling. Also, this is their second version of the book, directed specifically to women. Other than discussing menopause, I don't think the second version was necessary. I say this because I found the "good girl" advice given by these incredibly grating, bordering on patronizing. Other readers, especially older readers, may not be so bothered by this tone in the writing. And that's not to say the authors didn't have examples of strong women throughout the book (eg, Hillary, the cycling club organizer and Aunt Kitty). I just thought I should note that the tone was distracting as I listened to the stories. Otherwise, the book offers helpful, simple-but-not-easy life advice that I think works at any age. Thanks!

So Good, I Want Everything This Author's Written
Revisado: 01-02-18
I liked this book because I love anthologies, I love well crafted, interweaving story lines. There were meet-cutes that I thought were going to be so predictable, and I was dead wrong. I found myself cheering and laughing out loud or every single character.
Another reason I liked the book, completely separate from the structure, is that the author had really keen insights on a number of very current issues. Sometimes when you read romantic fiction, the ideas and themes are stuffy and "from a certain generation." This author covered the gambit on different issues of today: varying generations in the work force, integrity versus image, acceptance and freedom...all in a book about a dress! this was just wonderful. So like I said in the title of this review, I am going to look for more this by this author.
