Historia
The are few forces more powerful than the Will of a fully trained Warden, but those who endeavor to become Wardens must first escape the crucible fires of Black Mark Academy. Very few who enter will leave as Wardens, and many will never leave at all. Lillin ends up at Black Mark Academy not as a willing volunteer, but as forced penance for a past wrong. She soon discovers that the training involved in becoming a Warden is more nightmarish than she could have imagined. With her face marked permanently for her past crimes, she has to either survive the Warden's cruel training program or die in the process. She must discover the determination within herself to move forward and kindle the flames of the eternal fire, the Warden's Will.

Great, stirring novel
Revisado: 11-27-18
At first, the main character is hard to like, however character development is one of the strong points of this book. Everyone can relate to trying to become something better, and Lillan sets herself some lofty goals given her wretched beginnings. The story is set in a world where a character's will determines their fate over all else, a world where wanting results in reality. All you have to do is will it to be, and yet the struggle to develop and use this power we all wish we had is an agonizing push through a terrible, complex world.

Historia
Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they’ve failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore. But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up.

Partially read
Revisado: 01-22-18
It seems alright, a little slow, and I knocked it down a couple stars for the extensive religious marination that got just plain irritating as it went on and on. I may update if I finish the thing and it picks up and the religious contemplation quiets a little.

Historia
At the heart of these stories, as with all the best of Lovecraft’s work, is the belief that the Earth was once inhabited by powerful and evil gods, just waiting for the chance to recolonise their planet. Cthulhu is one such god, lurking deep beneath the sea until called into being by cult followers who – like all humans – know not what they do.

Interesting for influence on contemporary works
Revisado: 10-29-16
As with many old pieces of work, there's racism touch upon it, most especially in the first story and not so much, thankfully, in the rest. I understand old texts have to be given some leeway, but this was a little over the top even for then.
The performance was fantastic, however. And it's amazing to see how the works of this author have influenced horror, the parallels between story lines and elements are impossible to ignore.

comfortably predictable
Revisado: 08-17-16
As always, some beloved characters die and others live, there's some scares and things turn out as they do. I enjoyed the book, I was intensely involved in the story, ready to find out how it played out and what horrors they cane across. My only complaint is that I knew who the big bad guy was the moment he was introduced. Maberry had a brilliant way with words and is capable of stirring up all kinds of suspense, but he's run out of peorple that he's set up to be bad guys that are shocking or painful to the reader. That's fine, the story still carries the day and there's plenty of suspense and mysteries to try and sort out, but it's still a bit of a let down. I'd still highly recommend the book.

Decent story
Revisado: 04-22-16
It lags at times, but there's a lot of action and interesting, long term family tangles. However, there's a lot of references to faith and God. Be prepared. I wasn't exactly looking for a sermon between action packed scenes or intriguing tangles of affairs myself. I also find it hard to take a character seriously that thanks the Lord, and not her tutors or the people who paid for her lessons, for the fact she knows a little of how to physically fight off an attacker.

werewolf fun
Revisado: 03-13-16
Lots and lots of "hiding pedro" with all sorts of pleasant varieties to it. Personally, I really like the disobedient, resistant to command type stuff, with frisky giving in, and this had a lot of that. Plot lines do seem to move by a bit fast, and there are multiple key events. Very good for what it is!

Description says fairytale, really about Judaism
Revisado: 09-24-14
I enjoy Orson Scott Card, both his Ender series and the Homecoming series, so I thought this was a pretty safe bet. What I love about Card is that his books usually examine morality and religion without seeming to completely embrace any single one.
This book spends the first 20 minutes at least talking only about converting to Judaism and in particular, the circumcision of the men in the family. It's horrible and barbaric, and Card's main character admits that, and then makes up an excuse for why it's alright anyway. Well it isn't, and this book is disgusting and doesn't make any sense thanks to the first 20 minutes. I wont be listening to the rest. I'd never get past thinking, "you had your penis clipped as a teen, how are you not feeling a whole lot of terrible repercussions from that?"

Historia
Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it's a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity's music ever since "Year Zero" (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang.

Witty as well as funny
Revisado: 08-28-14
I tried to get everyone I could to read of listen to this novel. It's wonderfully refreshing to encounter comedy that's also intelligent, and I mostly only find that balance in books and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Add to that a great voice in John Hodgman, and incredibly creative thinking born in Rob Reid, and suddenly you have this amazing piece of work.

Twists
Revisado: 08-19-14
Everything is a little hard to believe, a little convoluted, but not too bad. The narrator is alright at male voices, but she puts weird emphases on certain words sometimes.
Regardless, I like twists, even somewhat unbelievable ones. I like trying to figure out as I hear them coming. I could figure these ones out, but not until I got close to the twists. That's the trouble with twists, unbelievable ones get guessed late int he story but come off kind of false.
