Historia
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

What a memoir
Revisado: 05-28-23
This is a beautifully narrated memoir, and the weight of her story is so heavy and moving. I loved this book. As a fellow thespian, I appreciated her journey and brutal honesty about the love of the business. Viola Davis is a force and thank you for your vulnerability in telling your story. Phenomenal. Thank you. Sincerely, one of the 99% that is no longer in the business.

Historia
A powerful account of violence against Black women and girls in the United States and their fight for liberation, America, Goddam explores the combined force of anti-Blackness, misogyny, patriarchy, and capitalism in the lives of Black women and girls in the United States today. Through personal accounts and hard-hitting analysis, Black feminist historian Treva B. Lindsey starkly assesses the forms and legacies of violence against Black women and girls, as well as their demands for justice for themselves and their communities.

An in depth look at the Black Woman experience in America
Revisado: 03-18-23
Thank you, Treva, for writing this and sharing your personal experiences with us as well. I can’t imagine the toll it took on you to write this, as it was extremely wearing for me as I listened. I had to take frequent breaks because the stories are heavy, and it is a reminder of how quickly these stories move or are non existent in the news cycles. A must read to gain a clear understanding of the impacts of these systems on Black women and our mental, emotional, physical health and socioeconomic status.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Necessary read to preserve democratic values
Revisado: 12-26-22
Ruth Ben-Ghiat’s analysis of the authoritarian playbook is a necessary read as we (those of us in the United States) experience an extremist far right GOP pushing these tactics in order to maintain power in our country. It is timely, and terrifyingly insightful. We cannot stop, and we must activate to preserve democracy for future generations.

Historia
What happens when a woman seeking an abortion is turned away? To answer this question, Diana Greene Foster assembled a team of scientists—psychologists, epidemiologists, demographers, nurses, physicians, economists, sociologists, and public health researchers—to conduct a 10-year study. They followed a thousand women from across America, some of whom received abortions, some of whom were turned away. Now, for the first time, Dr. Foster presents the results of this landmark study in one extraordinary, groundbreaking book.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Historia
One of the leading physicists of her generation, Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is also one of fewer than one hundred Black American women to earn a PhD from a department of physics. Her vision of the cosmos is vibrant, buoyantly nontraditional, and grounded in Black and queer feminist lineages. Dr. Prescod-Weinstein urges us to recognize how science, like most fields, is rife with racism, misogyny, and other forms of oppression. She lays out a bold new approach to science and society, beginning with the belief that we all have a fundamental right to know and love the night sky.

What an amazing read!
Revisado: 01-25-22
This book brought you to the intersectionality of a queer black woman and physics, and what it means to be a scientist in a heteronormative cisgender, racist, patriarchal society. Dr. Prescod-Weinstein’s experiences really resonated with me and I thought it was brilliant, how she tied these issues to the study of the cosmos. The piece that stuck with me was how we have to find inspiration out there even when there is so much bad happening to us. Thank you for this book.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.
