Asians in MN! I loved it. The vivid sounds of Northern Minnesota totally took me there, and I was hooked into the mystery.

Plot holes galore
Revisado: 07-16-23
By the end, I stopped caring about the mystery bc literally nothing made sense. I still don’t know what happened or why.

Historia
It’s been a minute—or five years—since Jordan Vargas last saw his college friends, and twenty-eight years since their graduation from Berkeley when their adult lives officially began. Now Jordan, Jordy, Naomi, Craig, and Marielle find themselves at the brink of a new decade, with all the responsibilities of adulthood, yet no closer to having their lives figured out. Though not for a lack of trying. Over the years they’ve reunited in Big Sur to honor a decades-old pact to throw each other living “funerals,” celebrations to remind themselves that life is worth living.

I can’t stand these people
Revisado: 07-05-23
I almost never give up on books, but from the get-goi wasn’t into this one. The characters had no warmth between them. Their friendships felt empty - they didn’t even seem to like each other. Everything felt corny and contrived, like the book was made of drywall instead of wood. What finally made me put it down, after two hours of listening, was one of many tiny errors that distracted me from the story too easily. The last straw was when a character misquoted “where the wild things are.” That just pushed me over the edge. I almost felt disrespected as a reader, that he cared so little. Obviously I’m in the minority here, the guy obviously has lots of fans. But he’s not for me.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Kept me guessing and entertained
Revisado: 06-08-23
This was well-written and beautifully and affectingly read. The story is very of-the-moment as it comments on online scandals, #metoo, and the immediacy of information in our internet- and smartphone-fueled world. Just so good.

Wow wow wow
Revisado: 01-04-23
My kid read this and told me I had to read it. He said the mom is “like so you, mom.” I just finished it and I’m not sure about that assessment … but this was a well-wrought story, sensitive and funny, performed to perfection by the author and two other actors. Full disclosure, I usually don’t like audible originals too much, so this was a very wonderful surprise.

The first half is great…
Revisado: 01-03-23
This book started off really compelling with well-drawn characters and an engaging mystery. Then it goes off the rails as the plot turns to a complicated science fiction battle royale. I read to the end, but it was a bit of a trial. Thank goodness there were moments where it went back to the original story.

Historia
When New York Times columnist Paula Span found out she was going to become a grandmother, she went in search of the perfect grandparenting guide but came up short. Where was Dr. Spock for the silver-haired set? In The Bubbe Diaries, Span picks up where Spock left off. She passes along the latest research on sleep, safety, and bonding; explores why mother-in-laws can have tension with daughter-in-laws; and shows how Boomers are finding their own way through grandparenting.

Wonderful musings about becoming a grandparent
Revisado: 05-25-21
I always look forward to Ms Span’s missives in the New York Times. Her book is more of the same thoughtful, reassuring; real-life musings on what makes a family and how to go forward when things are changing - normal changes, like your child having a child of their own, and not-so-normal changes, like this pandemic. She is so measured and kind, you may find yourself wishing you had such a bubbe in your life. Well, I did, anyway. Highly recommended, excellent advice, and a lovely gift for any grandparent.

There’s no pot at the end of this rainbow.
Revisado: 06-15-20
The author follows an interesting trail that doesn’t really reach a conclusion. In addition, she reads the book herself and she has a lisp, a trembly voice, and a midwestern accent that grated on me.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Eerily similar look at the 1918 “Spanish flu”
Revisado: 06-12-20
Given current events, this book reads like a house on fire. The stories of medical fact-finding and mystery are well-told. The descriptions of entire towns full of corpses are as scary as any Stephen King novel. And the knowledge that we knew this was coming and did nothing is terrible.

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.
