Historia
Sinner. Villain. Ruthless. These are wicked names the Prince of Envy welcomes. They remind him what he isn’t: a saint. And when a cryptic note arrives, signaling the beginning of a deadly game, he knows he’ll be called much worse before it ends. Riddles, hexed objects, anonymous players, nothing will stand in his way. With a powerful artifact and his own future at stake, Envy is determined to win, though none of his meticulous plans prepare him for her, the frustrating artist who ignites his sin—and passion—like no other.

Don’t waste your money
Revisado: 12-19-23
Even great narration cannot save this audiobook. The character development is poor, the world building is half baked, the pacing is slow, and the plot didn't make sense. The sex scenes are ridiculous and eventually just become trite and boring. DNF at about 75% mark.

Historia
Free-spirited Lucy Westmore isn't yet a spinster, although she fully intends to be. Fortunately, an eccentric aunt has left her both a diary detailing the secrets to spinsterhood and a cottage in Cornwall. Unfortunately, an insufferable marquess is angling for her prize! Turning Lord Thomas Branston down flat should be easy. So why does this man who won't take no for an answer make Lucy's body and soul sigh yes?

Irritating heroine: Too stupid to live!
Revisado: 01-02-21
Lucy is one of those heroines who insists on being contrary for the sake of it, and whose stubbornness often lead her into difficult and potentially dangerous situations for no other reason than that she won’t be told what to do by a man - which puts her into the TSTL bracket more often than I would have liked. The novel also is slow and overly long, very little romance until the very end. Not much happening until 2/3 of the way through. There are TOO many supporting characters: Lucy’s family, the butler, the townspeople, random orphan waif children, stray cats….none of which really propel the plot anywhere. It’s tedious and boring. So much time is spent hearing about the people in the village, it detracted from the main couple. Often times Lucy just reads like she is possessed with the ghost of her deceased Aunt, which would have been cool, if it were literally what was written, but really she just seems redundant. Both main characters seem flat and their romance was overshadowed by the story of when the spinster “Aunt E” came to the remote town of Lizard Bay. (That should have been it’s own book, it probably would have been more interesting.) The worst part was that the narrator reads the role of the younger heroine almost in the same intonations as the elderly aunt, making her sound old and irritating. I do NOT recommend this book. Skip it!!!!

Only 1 complaint -- TOO SHORT!
Revisado: 12-03-11
I loved the story of Ivy Blacksmith and Eben "Mad" Machen. As an introduction to Meljean's Iron Duke steampunk series, this is an amazing start. The very interesting and intriguing world building in this novella powerfully sets up the series. (My only complaint is that it was not a full length novel.) Meljean's heroes and heriones are always multi-dimensional, and Ivy Blacksmith is no exception. She is extremely intelligent, strong-willed, and equally matched by the pirate Machen. The story is entertainingly romantic and I hope to see more of these two characters some day. Yet, while I love the story, it is the audio rendition of this tale that is marvelous. Faye Adele's wonderful and rich reading of this story is absolutely magical. It is one of the best audiobooks that I have heard in a long time. There is so much variety to her voice, giving nuance to each characterization without it ever feeling forced. She articulates the inner thoughts of the characters in such lively and natural ways that I find myself listening to this download over and over again.
