Historia
For the last 100,000 years, we Sapiens have accumulated enormous power. But despite all our discoveries, inventions, and conquests, we now find ourselves in an existential crisis. The world is on the verge of ecological collapse. Misinformation abounds. And we are rushing headlong into the age of AI—a new information network that threatens to annihilate us. For all that we have accomplished, why are we so self-destructive? Nexus looks through the long lens of human history to consider how the flow of information has shaped us, and our world.

An essential read
Revisado: 02-03-25
Following the same style of the previous books via Harrari, Nexus explains the points patiently and clearly with preponderance of evidence. It is quite convincing of the factual threats that AI is imposing on our society at this time without being an alarmist
highly recommended.

Historia
About a third of the world population suffers from an anxiety disorder, and half of Americans have had at least one traumatic experience like rape, assault, shooting, or natural disasters. Fear and anxiety are with us everywhere we go. Fear is deeply woven into our biology, culture, politics, and day to day life. We sometimes don't even know what we are afraid of. What we know for sure is that we are afraid too often. But why are we so scared? How does fear work in our brains? What is the evolutionary purpose of fear? In this book, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist answers these questions.

To understand the roots of personality is to understand motivations and influences that shape behavior, which in turn reflect how you deal with the opportunities and challenges of everyday life. That's the focus of these exciting 24 lectures, in which you examine the differences in people's personalities, where these differences come from, and how they shape our lives. Drawing on information gleaned from psychology, neuroscience, and genetics, Professor Leary opens the door to understanding how personality works and why.

Nothing about “why”

This book is about tools for measurement of human behavior. Not a bad one at that, but nothing about explaining why the behaviors occur. Read “Behave” by Robert Sapolsky, Instead.

Historia
Dmitri Shostakovich is without a doubt one of the central composers of the 20th century. Drawing on both the flood of declassified documents from the Soviet Union that began in 1991 and Shostakovich's own extraordinarily frank posthumous reminiscences, Professor Greenberg shows how Shostakovich, who, in the words of a friend, "did not want to rot in a prison or a graveyard" was still unwilling to become a docile instrument of the Soviet regime.

a bit over enthusiastic

I love Prof Greenberg and his passion and hate dictators like Stalin but still ...Prof Greenberg sounded a bit too angry for a lecture series on a composer (as opposed to trying to demolish communist regimes of the past). Still pretty good though.

Historia
Where did I come from? Why do I have two arms but just one head? How is my left leg the same size as my right one? Why are the fingerprints of identical twins not identical? How did my brain learn to learn? Why must I die? Questions like these remain biology's deepest and most ancient challenges. They force us to confront a fundamental biological problem: How can something as large and complex as a human body organize itself from the simplicity of a fertilized egg?

Very clear description of the title
Revisado: 11-06-15
Where does Life Unfolding rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Great book! In much detail (which surprisingly is not extremely technical or boring) the books describes what it promises: How human body creates itself. This has been the most understandable and convincing account, helping me understand how this complexity can be created without a creator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
uh...human?
What does Napoleon Ryan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He just does his part OK
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I'd rather think in between the listenings. Great book!

Would you listen to The Marshmallow Test again? Why?
I loved it, but no; there are more books to read.
What did you like best about this story?
I am a child psychiatrist and thought I already knew what the test was about. Nevertheless I read it and was surprised by the depth of new understanding this book helped me acquire of concepts of impulse control.
What about Alan Alda’s performance did you like?
his performance somehow matched the book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I'd rather have time to think in between listenings.

Max Tegmark leads us on an astonishing journey through past, present and future, and through the physics, astronomy, and mathematics that are the foundation of his work, most particularly his hypothesis that our physical reality is a mathematical structure and his theory of the ultimate multiverse. In a dazzling combination of both popular and groundbreaking science, he not only helps us grasp his often mind-boggling theories, but he also shares with us some of the often surprising triumphs and disappointments that have shaped his life as a scientist.

it depends on who YOU are
Revisado: 11-06-15
What did you like best about Our Mathematical Universe? What did you like least?
I am not a physicist, just educated in another side of science (I am a psychiatrist) and very interested in understanding the nature of reality. I was very impressed by the passion of the writer and that was satisfying. Most of the material covered went above my head (e.g. the entire concept of "level 4 multiverse"). However I enjoyed the little that I actually understood here and there. I think I would have liked it more if I were a physicist.
What did you like best about this story?
Mostly the passion for pursuit of reality.
What about Rob Shapiro’s performance did you like?
Excellent job!
Did Our Mathematical Universe inspire you to do anything?
Yes! read more books!
