Delightfully macabre, charmingly creepy!
Revisado: 08-28-24
These 22 cleverly written stories cover the gamut from charming to macabre, delightful to creepy, sweet to bizarre. There's something for everyone. The two narrators do a wonderful job of bringing the listener into the stories. Prepare yourself for an intriguing, fun, sometimes dark performance. Well done!

Her presence has always been a constant, demanding focus in my life. Now, however, it's evolving into something deeper, with unsettling imitations and intrusive encroachments into every aspect of my world. The struggle to create distance only seems to intensify Donna's attachment, Pulling her dangerously closer.

Dark and intriguing
Revisado: 06-01-24
I enjoyed listening to all 3 books as one wild, dark story about some very damaged people.
As an American, I didn't initially enjoy the heavy Yorkshire accents. However, over time I grew to appreciate them as important to the telling of the story.

Historia
The 1950s are on the horizon, and Archer is in dire need of a fresh start after a nearly fatal detour in Poca City. So Archer hops on a bus and begins the long journey out west to California, where rumor has it there is money to be made if you’re hard-working, lucky, criminal - or all three. Along the way, Archer stops in Reno, where a stroke of fortune delivers him a wad of cash and an eye-popping blood-red 1939 Delahaye convertible - plus a companion for the final leg of the journey, an aspiring actress named Liberty Callahan who is planning to try her luck in Hollywood.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

she did it again!
Revisado: 09-11-19
Once again, Louise Penny hits one out of the park! I looked forward to the release of A Better Man and I was not disappointed. I once again enjoyed spending time with my friends in Three Pines and was enthralled by the twist and turns in the story- and by the surprise ending. I'm only sorry that, now that I've finished the book, I will have to wait until the next Armand Gamache story to revisit with my old friends and enjoy the unfolding of another well written tale.

A mult-layered tapestry
Revisado: 04-06-19
This is by far the most layered and complex of The Exit Unicorn series - stories within stories- all richly told in prose and translated into a verbal tapestry by the warm and compelling voice of Gary Furlong. We are left, as always, yearning for more.
Well done!

Historia
In this sweeping and powerful epic the journey begins in the "terrible beauty" of Northern Ireland during a time when conflict reigns and no one is spared from tragedy and sorrow, the time known as The Troubles. It is the spring of 1968 in Belfast and James Kirkpatrick has just lost his father under suspicious circumstances, Casey Riordan is released from prison after five years and Pamela O'Flaherty has crossed an ocean and a lifetime of memories to find the man she fell in love with as a little girl. All three lives are on a collision course with each other against the backdrop of the burgeoning civil rights movement and a nation on the brink of revolution. They come from disparate backgrounds - Jamie a wealthy aristocrat whose life is like an imperfect but multi-faceted jewel-brilliant, flawed and with a glitter that is designed to distract the observer. Casey, a card-carrying member of the Irish Republican Army, who must face the fact that five years away has left him a stranger, a misfit in his own neighborhood where not everyone is sympathetic to a convicted rebel. Pamela, who has come to Ireland in search of a memory and a man who may not have existed in the first place.

I think I'm in love!
Revisado: 08-30-18
I was thrilled when I discovered that Cindy Brandner was creating a Mermaid audiobook. I have eagerly followed Pamela, Jamie and Casey's story throughout the Exit Unicorn series. As much as I enjoyed reading Mermaid however, having it read to me in the accomplished (and sexy) voice of Gary Furlong was a real treat. I didn't want to stop listening! Well done! Looking forward to listening to the next in the series when it's completed.
