Couldn’t follow the story so well. The affected narration was distracting. Recommend to audible to be more sensitive, less heavy handed in choice of narrators for classics.

This understated story resonates deeply in one’s gut. You won’t ever view America or especially Oakland, Ca. the same again afterwards. When it finishes, you will want to go back, and start again immediately at the beginning to know and feel each character a second time more deeply. Pay attention to the names of the characters as the subplots of this sometimes connected clan move quickly.

WHY WHY WHY? Kerouac liked jazz but do I have to listen to mixed music when hearing Kerouac's story. WHY is the narrator of this quintessential American fiction British? Want SO much to hear this story. Made 3 attempts and then finally threw in the towel. Hoping Audible will read this and release a Visions of Cody version with no music and a Kerouac style narrator. Thank you Audible. SO WONDERFUL to be back in touch with Jack!!

Written in the interspersed voices of three daughters and a mother transplanted to the Congo, this story sews its soul into you slowly. By the later chapters, your find your seams have become one with those of these women. Kingsolver gradually lays bare the American complicity in self-serving African politics, rending our hearts along with those of the Price women and the Congo. Yet, the novel leaves the door of hope open. Like those of Pearl Buck, these characters and this Central African country, will haunt a section of your consciousness for a long time.
