A masterpiece of Swedish noir crime fiction.

Beyond question one of the finest thrillers written in the last 50 years. The narrator was superb and a perfect fit for this iconic novel.

Nothing Like A Good Entrance
Revisado: 02-18-23
Getting off to a good start when writing a series, especially in today's crowded marketplace, requires an attention getter as well as solid word craft.
Every Dead Thing has both. The plot construction has some interesting quirks, funny moments and memorable characters. The writing skill doesn't drag. So, roll on book two.

True to Form
Revisado: 06-26-22
I've listened to a lot of Jack Reacher on Audible. That's for damn sure. So now, I decided to go back and listen to the first one, having read it hard copy a long time ago. With Jeff Harding on narration, it's the full package. Modern, pacy and like your favourite food, leaves you licking your lips ready for more.

Munich in 1949 is a place where a private eye can find a lot of not-quite-reputable work. It fills Bernie Gunther with disgust - but it also fills his sorely depleted wallet. Then a woman seeks him out. Her husband has disappeared. She's not looking to get him back - he's a wanted man who ran one of the most vicious concentration camps in Poland. She just wants confirmation that he's dead.

What's In A Title?
Revisado: 02-13-22
Quite a lot, if the writer iis Phillip Kerr! As always, we learn a heap about history, human inhumanity and the cost of having a strong morale compass. As for Jeff Harding, he's brilliant as usual.

Not Just Another Space Story
Revisado: 05-30-21
Jack Campbell not only writes another good yarn in the Lost Fleet series, but also challenges us to think about what we pursue and why we do it, individually AND corporately. Way better fair than simple 'shoot 'em up' or 'last man standing' stuff.

Take The Long Way Home
Revisado: 05-02-21
With 'BINGEWORTHY' now a standard Netflix category, the attraction to write a big series of books with potential movie rights down the track must surely be enticing. The danger is that the creator of the story will run out of decent ideas and the series will run out of gas.
At no#4 in the Lost Fleet series, I figured the storyline would reveal if Jack Cambell is more than a 'one trick pony'. Pleased to say, though the fleet is still 'lost in space', the author most definitely isn't!
As a stand alone read, one could do a lot worse! Worth the effort.

Does It Get Much Better?
Revisado: 10-04-20
How many secrets do YOU have? How many OF those will get you into a fair amount of trouble?
Suffice it to say, Bernie Gunter lands himself in far too much trouble from a life of secrets he'd rather be rid of, not to mention one or two people as well.
Phillip Kerr's thorough rendition of post WWII's problems as they entwine Gunter, makes for a terrific read. As for Jeff Harding...narrators don't get much better either!
My advice to you, get some decent whiskey and a good cigar, lock the door on the 21st century and enjoy The Other Side Of Silence. It's a blast from the past.

In The Player of Games, Iain Banks gives yet another virtuoso lesson in the art of entertainment and engineering.
