Historia
Gabriel Oak is a young shepherd. With the savings of a frugal life and a loan, he has leased and stocked a sheep farm. He falls in love with a newcomer eight years his junior, Bathsheba Everdene, a proud beauty who arrives to live with her aunt, Mrs. Hurst. She comes to like him well enough and even saves his life once, but when he makes her an unadorned offer of marriage, she refuses; she values her independence too much and him too little.

I didn’t love it
Revisado: 04-30-25
Loved narrator’s voice distinctions. As I’ve experienced listening to her in Outlander, she seems to live each character and has no trouble pulling them up immediately.
But the story felt off the whole time. Maybe that’s the way this author tells stories and I just don’t get him. I’ll have to try another one of his books.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Mystery too mysterious
Revisado: 12-31-24
My first read of this author and I think will be my last. The overall story was a mystery and the reader is constantly looking for clues. But the story, while a good premise and unpredictable ending took way too long to get there. Reminds me of those movies that are 4 hours long and you’re left wondering why.
The story could have been told in far less time and the extra details in the side plots were not written well enough to leave me feeling satisfied. I wanted the book to over when there was still several hours to go.

Fun 'girl meets boy, etc' story, light on intrigue
Revisado: 12-24-24
This was a good story for listening while hands are otherwise engaged, ie, cooking, wrapping holiday presents. But the narrator was stiff and the intonation felt awkward.

A great follow up to the first book
Revisado: 06-27-23
This was a good 2nd book although not as compelling for me as the 1st one. Maybe I was distracted but I found the names more difficult to track. That aside, the book was well-written and enjoyable with a story line that had just the right amounts of tension, disappointment and triumph.
Historical fiction is a new genre for me and I am enjoying learning about this period,
Donald presents the work in a way that you clearly get the context and spirit. This series adds dimension to the same time period I was first introduced to in the television series ‘The Last Kingdom’. The combination of the visuals on tv and the written works make both more enjoyable.

Interesting unique story
Revisado: 03-05-23
Fairly new to Clive cussler and enjoying his style. Tremendous action, lots of tense moments, opportunities to think about new ‘what if’ technology, but as is true with series books like this it’s sure to work out and the hero will figure out a last minute solution. But after a few books of the series I’m ready for something completely different. It’s an enjoyable read, light reading for a week poolside.
Scott Brick is amazing!

A Storyteller’s Story
Revisado: 10-02-22
Based on the reviews I expected not to like it. Instead I’m prepared to give it rave reviews. Although it’s not SK classic horror, this is fine work. I imagine that if I were a storyteller I would appreciate the artistry even more.
The story builds somewhat slowly but SK has such a way of describing things that you just get to revel in the day-to-day lives of the characters —- not at all boring, just with a pace thats comfortable and easy. You know it’s possible that something bad is coming; It’s also possible that it’s just a good story about a small town family and a small town preacher with flashes of excitement and sadness but maybe all heading to a happy ending. Quite impossible to predict.
And the narrator has just the right affect, same slow and easy projection which seemed to match the pace of the story.
Definitely different but I think showcases SK adept writing skills.

Excellent storyline and fantastic narrator
Revisado: 01-06-21
Perhaps because the idea of voodoo is fascinating and mysterious to me but I was captured almost immediately by the author's representation. I have no idea whether this was an 'accurate' view of how voodoo is practiced but it certainly played on my suspicions. A story of love, devotion, teen angst, friendship, and the power of family ties, all under a cloud of evil spirits just waiting for an opening to possess unsuspecting humans.
And, as other reviewers have said, the narrator shows real breadth in her ability to make the listener believe in the character. More importantly, she switches characters so smoothly that the listener can easily believe each character is actually speaking.
