I enjoyed this book very much and will continue on in the series. It was interesting to listen to what medievel life was like - not for kings and queens - but for everyday people. I also appreciated learning more about life after the plague. Well done, Ms. Swinfen!

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.

Very Different!
Revisado: 03-11-23
I can't decide which genre this book best fits with. It's not like anything I've read before. At this time, when climate and warfare have caused so many people to become refugees, I believe this is a very important story. Highly recommended!

Historia
Like Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place, Sidik Fofana’s electrifying collection of eight interconnected stories showcases the strengths, struggles, and hopes of one residential community in a powerful storytelling experience. Each short story follows a tenant in the Banneker Homes, a low-income high rise in Harlem where gentrification weighs on everyone’s mind. We root for these characters and more as they weave in and out of each other’s lives, endeavoring to escape from their pasts and blaze new paths forward for themselves and the people they love.

LOVED IT !
Revisado: 02-08-23
I'm a white woman in my 60s who lives in the country. My favorite genre is history and historical fiction. So, it might seem a little off that I loved this book so much, but I really did. Bravo, Mr. Fofana!

Historia
When novice monk Tenzin Dorje is told by his lama that the Red Army is invading Tibet, his country's darkest moment paradoxically gives him a sense of purpose like no other. He accepts a mission to carry two ancient, secret texts across the Himalayas to safety. Half a century later, in a paradox of similarly troubling circumstances, Matt Lester is called upon to convey his own particular wisdom as a scientist, when Matt's nanotech project is mysteriously moved from London to a research incubator in Los Angeles.

Forests, birds, winds and even wild crickets - this audio track has it all to get you in the mood for a relaxed, disturbance-free state of mind. This recording moves from gentle birdsong to occasional wind whistles intertwined with distinctive comforting chirps of forest crickets. This perfect natural combination will effectively block urban noises or distracting human chatter and provide a calm, peaceful background for work or relaxation.

Sound mixing is fine, thus my 3 stars for performance. However, it's clear that separate tracks were mixed and this is not a recording from nature. Crickets are nocturnal, birds are diurnal. When I bought the recording, I thought that I'd hear crickets separately from birds - as it would be in nature. Instead there is the very unnatural sound of crickets chirping while birds are happily singing. It's just weird.

Historia
Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads, the novel tells the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her.

I hesitated to buy the audio edition of the book because I've seen the film several times. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book differed from the movie in some ways - mainly that the story-teller is Chief Brome, played by Will Sampson in the movie. His point of view, and his background, made the story great for me.

This is such a depressing book, but I couldn't walk away from it. I finished in one day. I listened to the audio edition that was narrated by the author. His narration was okay, but occasionally I struggled to understand what he said.

Historia
La moria grandissima began its terrible journey across the European and Asian continents in 1347, leaving unimaginable devastation in its wake. Five years later, 25 million people were dead, felled by the scourge that would come to be called the Black Death. The Great Mortality is the extraordinary epic account of the worst natural disaster in European history - a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminates humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born.

I learned a great deal about European medieval history from this book - not just about the plague. It's a bit repetitive, but I didn't mind. The personal stories of those who died from plague, and those who survived, brought the history alive. The narration is excellent!

Historia
Crazy Horse was the legendary military leader of the Oglala Sioux whose personal power and social nonconformity contributed to his reputation as being “strange.” Crazy Horse fought in many battles, including the famous Battle of the Little Bighorn, and held out tirelessly against the US government’s efforts to confine the Native Americans to reservations. Eventually, in the spring of 1877, he surrendered to military forces and ended up meeting a violent death. Now, nearly a century and a half later, Crazy Horse continues to hold a special place in the hearts and minds of people.

Revisado: 06-29-22
I first read this book 54 years ago. I was 12 years old, and I've read my well-worn paperback several times since then. I can honestly say that the story of Crazy Horse influenced my world view. I learned to (at least try) to understand the outlook of people whose cultures are very different from my own. I also developed a life-long interest in the history of the First Nations of the Americas. I owe Mari Sandoz for enriching my life. I am pleased to experience the audio edition of my favorite book, and to be the first to review it on Audible.
