Engaging story excellent performance
Revisado: 11-19-23
Author tells a tale with many twists and turns. Writing style is occasionally poetry in prose when describing landscapes and characters which reach for Dickensian heights. The appendix went off into philosophical weeds, but ended with one last interesting tidbit.

Historia
When The Sport of the Gods opens, the Hamilton family is doing relatively well. They have stable jobs and good reputations as servants for a wealthy Southern family - but they also have little sense of how tenuous their existence has become. When money goes missing, the supposed victim points a finger at patriarch Berry Hamilton, and Berry is sentenced to ten years of hard labor. In response, Berry’s wife, Fannie, and his two children, Joe and Kit, migrate to New York City. Their hope is that the great city of the North will provide them with a fresh start.

The drama and dilemma of reconstruction south and the issues surrounding northern migration of minorities and the injustices and temptations that resulted are presented in an intelligent if somewhat stilted 19th century style.

Interesting descriptions of the rivers and dangers of the outback of Brazil. The legal entanglements were sometimes tedious and character development of minor characters seemed shallow. Overall though a good story.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Insightful interpretation with excellent historical perspective
Revisado: 10-10-22
I ordered this book based on having read other books by the same author. Clear and concise presentation. Rohr puts each element of this well known scripture into historical context while giving commentary on how the Sermon on the Mount applies to our daily lives and globally to our troubled world. He provides sensitive insights and hope filled analysis along with some disturbing observations about some past misrepresentations of some passages.
This would be an excellent read for any person wishing to broaden their view beyond traditional interpretations of scripture .

Historia
In his decades as a globally recognized teacher, Richard Rohr has helped millions realize what is at stake in matters of faith and spirituality. Yet Rohr has never written on the most perennially talked about topic in Christianity: Jesus. Most know who Jesus was, but who was Christ? Drawing on scripture, history, and spiritual practice, Rohr articulates a transformative view of Jesus Christ as a portrait of God’s constant, unfolding work in the world.

War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.
