Historia
Ashlock wakes in the courtyard of a demonic sect... as a tree. A tree that eats people. An odd start to a new life. Almost as strange as the humans flying through the skies on flaming swords and challenging the heavens. After all, this is a world where humans could chase the goal of immortality through the art of cultivation. But Ashlock is merely a sapling in a desolate courtyard, left alone with his thoughts and unable to speak to those passing him by. Unless he does something about it.

A Demonic Tree
Revisado: 03-08-24
Love the concept. Appreciate the execution. I personally disliked some of the pacing of the story and some minor inconsistencies in how characters were narrated. Will keep coming back for more as long as the writer loves this project

Historia
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

It's Strength is it's weakness. Repetition a sin.
Revisado: 09-09-18
The Narrator brings it to life.
The twists and turns of the story are unexpected enough.
The humor and modern pop culture references are successful in bringing a smile to my face.
And the presence of a MacGuffin in the form of Skippy integral to the whole plot makes any
and all unlikely events beyond criticism. It must have given the author a whole lot of freedom
which I can appreciate.
Through Science fiction jibber jabber and resource scarcity. Some limitations do apply, I can
imagine the writer having a lot of fun on one hand overpowering skippy and on the other
limiting him.
Anyway. Though enjoyable and I will be continuing the series. I had some issues with this
installment. From small to glaring.
1. It listened like 2 to 3 short stories combined into 1 book. Spec Ops is like a string of missions
that somewhat loosely role into one another. This felt at times somewhat random.
2. The universe is small, ironically. All info is processed through the eyes of Bishop and Skippy.
Although this keeps things very concise and gives the writer a lot of room for plot surprise. It
disappoints me a bit.
3. Even within the crew of the Flying Dutchmen. There is this extreme laser focus on the 2 main
characters. I enjoy their back and forth, but I so miss other perspectives.
4. The writer seems to like to repeat a lot of basic info all the time, but subsequently speed through some
of the more complex sci-fi jibber jabber. I would have that switch around.
5. All this narrowing of perspective is made the more frustrating due to the extreme repetitiveness
of Skippy's and Bishops banter. Monkey Jokes being the worst offender. It's not the joke, its the sheer
amount of repetition.
To summarize. I am not critical, because I dislike it. I am critical because I do like it and the first installment.
Old themes and concepts updated to modern social and scientific sensibilities. I love that. Same reason why
I like the Bobiverse Book trilogy. Having said that. This book with the exemption to the more obscure rapid
mental sci-fi and military protocol stuff. Felt deliberately dumbed down / simplified. This urked me.
Pro. Enjoyable story, good narration, fun, nice sci-fi world concepts. Focused.
Con. Dumbed Down, Repetitive, to narrow in it's character perspectives.
PS. Is it just me or could the writer not really decide on a future love interest for Joe and simply set up multiple
possibilities for him in future books?

Historia
Humanity has colonized the planets - interstellar travel is still beyond our reach, but the solar system has become a dense network of colonies. But there are tensions - the mineral-rich outer planets resent their dependence on Earth and Mars and the political and military clout they wield over the Belt and beyond. Now, when Captain Jim Holden's ice miner stumbles across a derelict, abandoned ship, he uncovers a secret that threatens to throw the entire system into war.

Surpassed Expectations
Revisado: 05-20-18
Well Written. Much more philosophical, introspective and nuanced than the TV series. Still their complimentary.
