Religious inspirational mystery
Revisado: 09-17-24
This had more and more passages about praying and God. It’s not labeled as religious fiction, but it should have a label.

So much potential. So much back and forth and confusion. I never did understand the world, the referenced war, and more. It could have been something a lot more enjoyable.

Audible, do better! This is Christian fiction.
Revisado: 11-19-23
Audible, do better! Categorize books with appropriate descriptors. I love looking at those descriptors and not wasting my time or money when I see a category that I do not want to read.
This book is currently labeled as “fantasy, supernatural, suspense, thriller & suspense, exciting, heartfelt” Not one of those says this is Christian fiction. It IS Christian fiction and it’s not subtle. After spending over two hours waiting for the thriller or supernatural, I’m done.
Before I quit, I went to see if Amazon had it categorized differently. Yup. “Religious Mysteries” and “Christian Mystery & Suspense”.
Writing and narrator are fine. It must be a verrry slow burn because there are plenty of wonderful reviews of this novel.
I like a slow burn. I just don’t want two plus hours of setup for our protagonist’s eventual return/rebirth in Christ.

Historia
When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Bill Rustad and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to Outland - an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. The group races to establish control of the portal before the government, the military, or evildoers can take it away. Then everything changes when the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet.

Loved it. Narrator was A+
Revisado: 09-18-23
Astonishingly skilled narrator. Editing and voices were seamless.
The book is fun. There are moments where I genuinely laughed out loud. I enjoyed a lot of the dialog.
Lots of visuals in this book. It comes alive.
Sometimes I found myself coming out of the story with skepticism about how fast they were doing everything (and the questionable knowledge level of many undergrads I’ve known)…and then I’d go back to being so satisfied they had their supplies and our protagonists were such great students.
The characters are unique and are becoming more and more fleshed out in my mind. I can definitely tell them apart. Also, the narrator has made it so perfectly clear for me.
Looking forward to where this goes in the next book.

Outstanding performance
Revisado: 03-15-23
Wow. Voice actors were outstanding, especially the main one. Really exceptional.
Story was intriguing. I would have enjoyed a full book.
Ending was complete, but I would have been happier with another paragraph or two of an ending.

His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Enjoyable listen with superb narrator
Revisado: 10-14-22
This isn’t a 5-star Stephen King book, but it is an enjoyable read. Reminds me of an old school fantasy novel.
The protagonist is a 17-year-old boy, but it’s not Young Adult fiction. Lots of thoughts and references that few 17yo boys would probably know so well.
There was some repetitiveness and too many of the same explanations about the language perceptions. I usually write this off to a book not having a huge publishing house’s editors, so I have to assume this was a deliberate choice from a literary master. Idk
I felt some disappointment when I realized it wasn’t going to become a compelling read for me. I kept thinking that a Netflix limited series would probably be SO good... (Then again, old Firestarter movie and new Firestarter remake do not prove this will be so.)
When I faced facts and realized it wasn’t a really slow burn, I just enjoyed it for the fantasy it was.
I needed to know more about some of the important characters, yet there were plenty who became vivid for me.
Something I realized that I love about Stephen King’s novels is that I can fairly easily distinguish between his large cast of characters. The narrator can help this so much and absolutely did so.
It is such a pleasure to listen to a wonderful narrator master a story.

Narrator not good with female voices
Revisado: 05-22-20
I read a hard copy until Part 3 and then switched to audio. Narrator sounded fine as Snow but I wanted to scream when he voiced Lucy Gray or any female character. I did not “hear” her as whiny when I read the first two parts. Majorly disliked that.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

This is a sequel!
Revisado: 09-12-19
As much as I wanted answers, I sort of thought the first book was better without. I started the sequel with some apprehension.
I was so relieved! The Testaments gave more information without taking away from Handmaid’s Tale. It didn’t tie everything in a neat and tidy bow, but it revealed more of the world in a satisfying way. Well, somewhat satisfying. I now want more.
And, if you’re watching the Hulu series, I don’t feel that it changed anything there either. It works!
