Historia
On a cool, overcast afternoon in April 2016, a salacious tip arrived at the L.A. Times that reporter Paul Pringle thought should have taken, at most, a few weeks to check out: a drug overdose at a fancy hotel involving one of the University of Southern California’s shiniest stars—Dr. Carmen Puliafito, the head of the prestigious medical school. Pringle, who’d long done battle with USC and its almost impenetrable culture of silence, knew reporting the story wouldn’t be a walk in the park. USC is the largest private employer in the city of L.A., and it casts a long shadow.

I Can’t Believe He Wrote An Entire Book About This
Revisado: 02-21-23
I can’t believe this guy managed to stretch the story of reporting one story into an entire book. It’s a medium interesting story and all, but Jesus Christ he treats the news of a doctor doing drugs with his sugar baby like it’s Watergate. And then half the book is him reacting to seemingly normal sounding edits of his story like his coworkers are trying to censor the pentagon papers. It was interesting enough that I kept going but I’ve never seen someone put this much time into descriptions of every petty workplace squabble, down to including full texts of his Strongly Worded Emails. Get a grip, dude.

Historia
Los Angeles in the 1960s: riots in Watts and on the Sunset Strip, wild weekends in Malibu, late nights at The Daisy discotheque, openings at the Ferus Gallery, and the convergence of pop art, rock and roll, and the New Hollywood. At the center of it all, one inspired, improbable, and highly combustible couple—Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward—lived out the emblematic love story of ’60s L.A.

I almost checked out when the author spent far too much time describing Hopper and Hayward’s respective childhoods, but I’m glad I did because the meat of the book was fantastic.

Historia
In September 2016, Jerry Stahl was feeling nervous on the eve of a two-week trip across Poland and Germany. But it was not just the stops at Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Dachau that gave him anxiety. It was the fact that he would be traveling with two dozen strangers, by bus. In a tour group. And he was not a tour-group kind of guy. The decision to visit Holocaust-world did not come easy. Stahl's lifelong depression at an all-time high, his career and personal life at an all-time low, he had the idea to go on a trip where the despair he was feeling would be appropriate.

Subject matter had me intrigued, but this guy writes like if David Simon’s most self-satisfied tweets and Dennis Miller’s most tortured analogies had a baby. Just pulsating with smugness. Feel like there might be something here if he dialed down the trying too hard like three notches? I gave it a decent shot but I just couldn’t.

Why music why???
Revisado: 07-08-20
I’m enjoying this story but I want to strangle the audiobook director. Who decided putting random musical interludes underneath the narration was a good idea? Let an audiobook be an audiobook, dammit.

Historia
A book that explores the enduring legends of Snake, Foo, Dr. Death, and John Madden's Oakland Raiders, Badasses is the definitive biography of arguably the last team to play old-fashioned tough-guy football. Peter Richmond, co-author of the New York Times best seller The Glory Game, offers a fascinating look at the 1970s Oakland Raiders, led by colorful greats from another era.

Good story, slightly obnoxious author and reader
Revisado: 01-06-19
The storytelling and interviews are pretty great, though any time the author pontificates on the “real” days of football it’s fairly intolerable. The former outweighs the latter. The reader also way overdoes it, especially the way he constantly overemphasizes the word “badass”, but you do eventually get used to him.

Historia
Arguably the most important American lawyer of the 20th century, Thurgood Marshall was on the verge of bringing the landmark suit Brown v. Board of Education before the US Supreme Court when he became embroiled in a case that threatened to change the course of the civil rights movement and to cost him his life. In 1949, Florida's orange industry was booming, and citrus barons got rich on the backs of cheap Jim Crow labor with the help of Sheriff Willis V. McCall, who ruled Lake County with murderous resolve....

Historia
The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819 the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with 20 crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than 90 days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, and disease and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival.

Great book, worst-produced audiobook I've heard.
Revisado: 10-19-14
The book is great. The audiobook production is quite possibly the worst I've heard. The reader is fine, but the production cuts off the last two or three words of every chapter, and the next one will start with such a different room tone and EQ that it barely even sounds like the same person. Again, a great book, but someone needs to get in there and fix the audiobook ASAP. Few things as aggravating as every chapter cutting off.
