Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

An Inspiring Story
Revisado: 07-28-21
Loved this book! What a great story of this young ladies experience on her first thru hike on the Application Trail. I learned several things about hiking- practical things and social things. I loved her stories about herself as well as the people that she met along the trail. I admire her strength to stick with it even through adversity.
As a side note from another review, I have also read Wild, this book as well as the main character are completely different- only sharing the common theme of thru hiking . Although I enjoyed both books, this one by far is my favorite.
My favorite quote:
“One of my favorite things about the trail is that you don’t see your face. I mean, I guess you can see it in the reflection of the water, but there are no mirrors, no vanities, and no places to check yourself out. I used to think that people perceived me based on how I looked, but now that I don’t see my face, I feel like people perceive me by how I treat them—that is, by what I say to them and how well I listen. Now I feel beautiful when I make other people smile.”
I just started her newest book: The Pursuit of Endurance and am loving it also.
The only other thing I want to add is Jennifer reads a bit slow for my ears. I enjoy listening at the 1.2 speed.

So inspiring!

I loved this book! So much great info and it was presented in an interesting way- not just dry content. I feel like there is hope for me- maybe it’s not ‘over’! I totally disagree with reviewer who says Dr.Lipman is just pushing products. He mentioned once at the end of the book that he had products available- while also mentioning what you could use instead if you did not want to purchase. Also great resources included with book for a diet and exercise program. Highly recommend this book!

Wow. A lesson in why not to spoil your children?
Revisado: 10-09-20
Let me start this by saying I am white, a southerner and Christian- a church girl. I can’t believe how petty this couple is!! I don’t know anyone in real life (especially any Christians, that are this racist. I’m only on chapter 7 and i am not sure I want to finish this book. I can’t believe what a hard time these two ‘Christian’ people are having excepting that this girl is biracial and excepting this girl- the husband’s daughter. How out of touch with reality is this woman? Does she really think her ‘saving her self for marriage’ makes up for her pettiness and judgmental attitude? Let’s not even get into forgiveness for her husband. Honestly with her attitude no wonder 1/2 the world hates Christians. Sad and revealing. I really hope this book gets better I’m trying to hang on and listen but I’m very disappointed at this point. I made it through chapter 8 and I am done. I hope the young wife ( whose pettiness and jealousy seem more normal for a teen, not an adult- even a young one) I just can’t finish this. Yikes.
