Historia
Comedian Pierre Novellie was on stage when a heckler suggested he was autistic. Usually, this disruption would be water off a duck's back but two things made this heckler different: first, he was himself autistic. Second, he turned out to be absolutely right. This random encounter led to a diagnosis of autism at the age of 31 that unravelled his world, explained his struggles and answered questions that had bothered him for his entire life: why were the other kids obsessed with Britney Spears instead of The Goon Show? Why don't people ever say what they mean? Why is everyone chewing so loudly?

Extremely thoughtful, hilarious, and relatable

Ah, the beauty of an autism book written by an autistic writer. Research heaven. How I enjoyed following his mind in patterns that my mind recognizes and loves. This book was very impressive in its research, depth, and compassion. I absolutely loved all the personal anecdotes. Novellie is an excellent writer and clearly delights in a well-written, true, aesthetically pleasing, entertaining sentence. This book has helped me as an autistic woman understand my autistic son and brother better. What a gift. Thank you!

Historia
Scottish comedian Fern Brady was told she couldn't be autistic because she'd had loads of boyfriends and is good at eye contact. In this frank and surreal memoir, she delivers a sharp and often hilarious portrait of neurodivergence and living unmasked.

I stayed up hours past my usual bedtime to listen to this. It was highly entertaining but more than that, highly illuminating in regards to autism. Several moments made me cry. The writing is so good, I never thought about it. A memoir without ego. Very impressive. As a woman who suspects I may have autism, this read is completely life-changing, compassionate, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Thank you, Fern.

Beauty-Obsessed Biography
Revisado: 10-09-22
The writer perpetuates over and over again the misogynistic treatment Nico received all her life. I don’t think it’s intentional misogyny—the writing is just bad. JOB wants to make the point that Nico was beautiful and she keeps making that point and she keeps quoting people commenting on Nico’s appearance. I think Nico would have been appalled by this constant commentary in the biography on her beauty and how it was fading. And there were gratuitous sexual details that seemed so gossipy. Even if everyone interviewed discussed Nico’s appearance, did JOB need to quote them on it all the time? Isn’t that in a way supporting those superficial and sexist behaviors because it forces readers to think of the one thing that Nico didn’t want us to focus on!?! It made me very sad for the talented and strong artist. I’m sorry, Nico.
