Terrible book
Revisado: 12-02-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book was almost plotless ... So much was just uninteresting filler. My husband and I listened to this in the car and both of us almost fell asleep.

Historia
In this irresistibly imagined belowstairs answer to Pride and Prejudice, the servants take center stage. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. When a mysterious new footman arrives, the orderly realm of the servants’ hall threatens to be completely, perhaps irrevocably, upended.

Very well done

What made the experience of listening to Longbourn the most enjoyable?
I thought this book might be superficial but it is anything but. Very convincing detail and well thought out.

Juvenile-sounding narrator

Any additional comments?
I have listened for three hours and find the narrator disturbing. He might be appropriate for a children's book for impressionable young boys, but not this sophisticated tale.

I've only listened to seven hours and I am so in awe of Hugh Dickson. Years ago I took a course on Dickens novels and I wish I had had this resource at that time. Amazing narrator!!!!!!!

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

Fabulous narrator
Revisado: 04-12-10
I don't know how to begin the praise for this narrator, Anthony Heald. I hope he looks back on comments about his work periodically, because it will give him a real lift. Quite simply, he made this book come alive with his sensitive phrasing, his change in tone of voice, his authenticity. I don't know if I would have enjoyed this book half as much if someone else had narrated it. He is a master.

Historia
Alone and un-tethered, feeling lost in the country he had come to regard as home, Hans stumbles upon the vibrant New York subculture of cricket, where he revisits his lost childhood and, thanks to a friendship with a charismatic and charming Trinidadian named Chuck Ramkissoon, begins to reconnect with his life and his adopted country. Ramkissoon, a Gatsby-like figure who is part idealist and part operator, introduces Hans to an "other" New York populated by immigrants and strivers of every race and nationality.

The wrong narrator
Revisado: 07-23-09
Jefferson Mays is absolutely inappropriate as the narrator of this book. His arch, bored tone takes away from a very interesting book. I saw Mays perform, "I am my own wife," and he was brilliant in that play but simply awful at reading Netherland.
I heard O'Neill read a bit of his own book on Fresh Air and it was an entirely different experience. But this performance.....very, very disappointing.
