Historia
Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her.

I grew to like the characters and related to the characters. This was a story of the power a woman could hold in the 1200’s.
I found the lesbian relationships in the book quite valid.

Like a lullaby
Revisado: 08-12-23
With all the pain in these difficult times, this lyrical story was soothing. Even when addressing the issues of abortion and climate change, the story stays reverent and loving.

Historia
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

This is more a meditation on human nature and life than a story. There is a lot the author packs into few words.

A very difficult book to summarize because so comprehensive. A beautifully written family story that deals with the major philosophical questions and events of the last century and the future.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Thoroughly enjoyed.
Revisado: 03-17-22
The author is new to me but I look forward to reading more of her work.
This novel is complex in the many important social psychological issues it addresses. Yet it is an easy book to absorb, a page turner that was hard to put down.

Thought provoking and easy listen
Revisado: 11-10-21
The author shares her own experience of growing up and leaving an impoverished area of northern England. She is frankly a good story teller. Further she shared first hand her means of becoming successful in the US and ultimately joining the Trump administration. She has personal experience working in Russia and compared government in the three countries. The purpose of her story is to inspire us to improve conditions and educational opportunities in poor underserved regions and communities on a personal level. She lays out a road map.
