Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Fantastic Story and Narration, Bad Music
Revisado: 07-09-24
Needful Things was the first Stephen King book I ever read, and remains one of my favorites. And King reading his own books is always golden. The only negative was the music, which was shockingly loud compared to the narration, often jarringly inconsistent with the story tonally, and at some points, I kid you not, drowned out the narration itself. The worst part is it was completely unnecessary, so it brought down the quality for no reason.

Good Story; Narration is Flat and Emotionless
Revisado: 07-09-24
The story itself is quite good; I had some minor issues with the changes created from retelling the original American Girl 6-book format into the 2-book format here, but overall it retained its original charm much better than I'd expected. The narration, however, is terrible.
Garcia speaks clearly and enunciates well, and some of the character voices she does are actually very good, but the narration itself sounded flat and emotionless. It reminded me of a bored adult reading a book to very young children and trying to force some excitement into their voice. My roommate literally asked me at one point if I was listening to an AI audiobook reading, and he wasn't joking. (He didn't even seem convinced when I told him it was a real VA.)
I thought about returning it, but I really wanted this title in audiobook form, and like I said the story itself is good, so I just decided to ignore it as much as I could. (I have the same complaints about the second book in the series, which is also read by Garcia.)

Historia
Four chiller novellas set to keep listeners awake long after bedtime. One Past Midnight: "The Langoliers" takes a red-eye flight from LA to Boston into a most unfriendly sky. Only 11 passengers survive, but landing in an eerily empty world makes them wish they hadn't. Something's waiting for them, you see.

"Secret Window, Secret Garden" Narration
Revisado: 01-27-21
If, like me, you want this audiobook mainly for the second novella featured, "Secret Window, Secret Garden," you may want to rethink. The story itself is an underrated masterpiece, and has been one of my favourite King tales for years. When I decided to try the audiobook, however, I discovered the narrator has a lisp (I haven't seen most of Mr. Woods' other work, so I was unaware of this). I don't know if others would find it as annoying as I did--I'm trained in acting with an emphasis on voice, so I'm more likely to pick up on stuff like that--but for me, it was so frustrating that I returned the book within 2 minutes of listening. It's especially annoying because, other than the lisp, the narration was very good for those first 2 minutes.
I can't offer a review on the other three stories' narration, as I never got to those. As to the stories themselves, both "The Langoliers" and "The Library Policeman" are very good, if not on the same level as "Secret Window." I've never liked "The Sun Dog"--it's poorly paced and overly complicated. It's meant as a sort of prologue to Needful Things, but you don't really need it to understand that story, and IMHO it has little value as a stand-alone work.

Historia
In the Tall Grass begins with a sister and brother who pull off to the side of the road after hearing a young boy crying for help from beyond the tall grass. Within minutes they are disoriented, in deeper than seems possible, and they've lost one another. The boy's cries are more and more desperate. What follows is a terrifying, entertaining, and masterfully told tale, as only Stephen King and Joe Hill can deliver.

A Disappointment for Fans of the Netflix Movie
Revisado: 04-17-20
A lot of the Audible reviews were distinctly negative, but since I absolutely loved the Netflix adaptation, I wasn't all that worried. I can count the number of times I've preferred a film to a book on one hand, and even then, I'd never NOT enjoyed a book when I liked the film version.
Well, that changed today. I mean... it wasn't actually BAD, but compared to the film version, it was such a disappointment!
PROS:
-It was definitely atmospheric and creepy (I got proper chills a few times while listening, complete with goosebumps and shivering).
-The narrator (Stephen Lang) did a great job.
CONS:
-It felt flat and two-dimensional compared to the mind-bending twists and turns of the movie. The plot was much simpler and lacked some of my favourite elements from the film, the ending was dramatically different, some of the characters I knew from the film never showed up at all, and of those who did, most were much less fleshed-out.
-Honestly, I felt like it relied too much on shock value. Many of the reviews described it as "disgusting" rather than scary, and while IMO it had a genuine scare factor too, I definitely see their point. I can't say much more without major spoilers, but an integral part of the climax is a subject where the horror comes from the taboo factor, rather than fear. (That part is also present in the movie, but it's much less central to the story.)
CONCLUSION:
This book is worth your time, but only barely. If you liked the Netflix adaptation, give it a read, but make sure you go into it not expecting the same level of depth.

A Chilling, Deeply Underrated Fantasy
Revisado: 04-15-20
I first read Clockwork in middle school, and found it terrifying, fascinating, and lovely. As an adult, I find it retains all of its charms. It's a horror story, one suitable for older children, yet still properly chilling for adults. It's a fairytale. It's even a love story. I especially love how it's told in various timelines that weave together to create the whole picture by the end. I wish it were more well-known, especially as the author is also responsible for the His Dark Materials trilogy (better known as The Golden Compass) and personally, I find this work superior.
The narration was nothing short of fantastic. The narrator gives distinct voices to all the characters, providing them with accents that never seem overdone or make the dialogue hard to follow. There are a very few sound effects, which are well-placed and serve to enhance the story rather than take attention away from it.
Altogether, this was everything I could have asked for from an audiobook and more. Highly recommended.
